anyone ever tried a 3.0 yamaha in a maverick? err i mean from a sho,, A idiot crashed into my 80 tuarus sho and totaled it. Im thinking this engine would rock in my 73 grabber that i have left over from the last maverick run.
I've thought about it. Lot of work. You'll probably have to do a Mustang II front end. No such thing as an '80 Taurus.
They're only 225 HP. Not really a hotrod to me, as compared to a 350+ HP small block. Complicated and expensive to repair as well. Common problems include cam cover leaks (look for oil in the spark plug holes) and IIRC, cam sprockets coming loose (but the sprocket issue may have been the SHO V8) But they're neat engines that will scream if they're modded! I seem to remember someone mentioning that if the engine accessories were able to withstand the speed, the engine itself would make power up to about 10,000 RPM. Doesn't surprise me to be honest, especially knowing how their higher performance 4 stroke engines are built. Friend of mine had a '93 SHO. Cool car. Kind of a sport sedan. The engine was a masterpiece. VERY smooth running but the AXOD transaxle (I believe that is what is was called) was a piece of junk to say the least. And the car itself fell apart. I think that a turbo 4 cylinder would be a more fun, easier to do swap. Or maybe even a Duratec V6. But the wiring/engine control system would be a bear!
Aerostar bellhousing lets it mate to a T-5. I saw pics of one in some little foreign 2 seat job. With massaging and reprogramming they are good for 300 HP. I had a '94 SHO. Best smooth running engine I have ever had. All the FORD accessories-A/C, P/S sucked! Seth
yeah i loved my sho, realy makes me mad that some rich bitch ran into it because she wasnt paying attention.
I had a '92 SHO/5spd car.Very nice car, developed electrical gremlins that no one could figure out, traded it for an '80 Malibu w/buckets,console,350 & rallies and 2k cash.Vowed to never have another SHO,it's a shame-the car was faster than most pre 93 f-bodies,faster than the 96-98 4.6 gts and got 25-28 mpg no matter how you drove it.Just too much technology for me.
There is alot of info out there on the web. one of them is .375 spacers on the intake runners to turn it around so it faces forward. I looked at this swap when radmav talked about it. The weight of the engine kept me away (same as a 302) but gas prices today would probably push me to it. I say do it
I think i will, im looking into all the parts to do it right, still waiting on the insurance adjuster to come look at the car and total it out. In the mean time im draging all the old parts out i collected when i was in the game years ago. I still have my grabbers original gas cap (no gas tank though). The sho was alot of fun. I just finished the 60k maitnence and it was a bear, taking a good 8 hours but the car was fun, as i beleave the mav is going to be.
