Headed out later this afternoon....havn't had enough time to put the new center section in yet, too busy at work but I'm goin... perfect weather here...the track I've always raced at closed a couple of weeks back due to urban sprawl the owners bought another track that had been closed for a couple of years and brought it back to life. Nice "green" track ought to be good for half track burnouts:16suspect ....who cares...I'm goin RACIN...
Good luck and enjoy getting the track "seasoned" Leaving now to put final touches on my rear, fit floor pans and finish firewall. Maybe done in July, can't wait! Again an Good luck!
I took mine out last night to do yet MORE test and tune. The Trans-brake wouldn't hold the first two times so I couldn't really gauge how well my 60' was going to be. I foot-braked it on the 3rd launch and Ol' Red rared up and left on what would be my best 60' to date: a 1.500 (previous best was a 1.55 on the T-brake). I screwed up on going to second gear (I didn't "bang it" into 2nd so it went into Neutral). I was about to make another foot-brake pass when I noticed the oil pressure was relatively low (<20psi @ idle where I normally have 60-80) so I loaded it up and brought it back home. I'll look into the oil pressure 'thing' later. Right now, I'm recharging the battery. The Emergency Shut-off was left on and the electric water pump drained the battery. All in all, I was satisfied with the 1.500 60' and a crowd-pleasing "wheelie" (just for you, Scott ) that leaving off the foot-brake provided. How'd you do Rick (or anyone else)?
Just got home from the track, was going to tnt tonight after checking the converter bolts on the glide install a couple weeks ago. They were tight but I thought while underneath I would check the crank end play for peace of mind. That is what destroyed the 331, ate the thrust bearing up. Well now the 347 is about to do it too, pryed the crank foward and back and it now has at least a 1/8th inch lateral movement. Am done racing the mont for awhile. Lucky I checked it, may be able to save most the internals this time. Got to figure out what is causing this BS on these engine's. Spent Thursday night and most of yesterday in the VA hospital for a very high potassium level which they got back to normal ok. Really looked foward to racin tonight and tomorrow's mulligan race. Guess maybe I might could drive tha Stang, am ninth in points and would like to catch Todd in 6th????? We'll see, am tired and disgusted, goin to bed!
none for me this weekend. 3 day big bucks race next weekend, but i'm not sure about it yet either. need to do some other things around the house.
Dave, sorry to hear the news (about the Potassium level thing and the crank play). 'Glad you got the more important ailment taken care of. Just for conversation sake (and to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about), has this 347 had a converter behind it that might have ballooned (putting a transverse load on the crank)? --------------------- Good luck next weekend, Don.
Well at least someone got to make a few passes...congrats on a great 60' Rick. I went out to crank the car up and do my normal pre-race check and I can't keep the car running like it's not getting any spark...I pull the distributor cap and the metal strap on the rotor where it engages the the cap "tit" is broken, just laying there ...I replace the rotor and still no go, It'll crank with alot of coaxing but doesn't sound right at all...I pull all the plugs, all look rich but not wet...2 of them have no OHM resistance (open) from top to tip...replace those...still a no go. I went and got new plugs last night and i'm gonna replace them all try a different cap and plug wires and see what happens. At this point I'm stumped...anyone got an idea?
That's pretty strange stuff, Rick. My Monte Carlo bar rubbed against the front side of the distributor cap once and caused the rotor to catch on the I.D of the cap and strip out. This was before I had solid mounts. When the front end suspension came back down (under deceleration after acceleration) it allowed the contact between the two. Without searching through all your pics, do you have anything that would put some kind of load on your dizzy cap (under load) and cause something similar? (I'm pretty sure you have front and rear plate but can't recall). After re-reading your post, it almost sounds like the 'innards' of the dizzy are worn (causing the rotor to "wobble"). Good luck and let us know what you find. ----- After I charged the battery on mine, I put 1/2 quart of oil in my engine hoping (against hope) that it would take care of the low oil pressure problem. No such luck. I'm hoping its a REALLY, REALLY loose rocker arm or something else as simple, maybe Teflon tape in the oil pressure gauge line, etc. I do NOT want to pull that engine again.
We went out last night, both of us made it a few rounds, but nothing to the end. It was just a great day to be at the track. Al raced the Maverick, it just ran like it always does. It was going in the low 12.80s at 104, there was about a 15-20 mph headwind. I raced my daily driver, a '00 Mustang GT and actually went 13.85s with it which I was pleased about. My reaction times were crap, I need to play something a littlet more exciting than Jimmy Buffett on the line I think ! It should go a little faster once we remove the limiter that I was hitting at the end of the track at 97mph. My 60-70 hours that I worked this week were quickly erased in about 5 hours at the track! And luckily nothing broke, so it only erased the stress, not the paycheck!
Well it turns out the problem had nothing to do with the ignition system...it was fuel delivery...a little piece of rubber(god knows where it came from) was lodged in the front carb bowl float needle, apparently it would lodge and dislodge causing the motor to do all kinds of crazy crap, finally the needle stuck, flooded the bowl and was just pouring gas in to the primaries and the engine wasn't even running. Took the front bowl and metering block off and cleaned it up and it's purring like a kitten. Rick if my problem can be a little piece of rubber on a float needle your problem can be a little piece of teflon tape in a pressure line.. I'm glad some folks had fun this weekend..
dont feel bad guys. i took my 21 yr. old out to the shop to help me check the car, and prep it. hes the power switch on guy, fuel on, pump etc. so im thinkin well just fire her up and see how the new fuel pump and hei gimmicks workin. all systems go boy? i yell. sure thing old man let er rip. okie dokie, here we go. runs like a scared bear for almost 40 seconds, and dies. w.t.h. im thinkin. try again. same thing. hmmm. check the floats, got some fuel, but not spillin. got awesome spark. gotta be the carb. readjust the floats, a bit better, but no go. seems he forgot to turn on the fuel valves..hahaha. i have 2 of em. 1 before the filter right off the cell, and 1 after as a check valve, and shutoff. sigh.... good help is hard to find. about a billion other funny things happened that evening, but that was the most serious of the lot. so just goes to show ya, anything can happen. ok, im done boring you with this long winded tale of woe.
hey wages-- i want to see that toy at the next fla mini meet. it will probably be in orlando so that is not to far to pull that car. plenty of trailer parking available too where i am thinking of holding it.
