What rear end gear do you have?

the C4 is a great street transmission, and AOD is easier on gas mileage.

The AOD only improves the mileage of cars that have very low gears that are primarily for drag racing or extreme acceleration. If you use the AOD with the gears that are stock in our cars your mileage will suffer in the same way and for the same reason that you get lower mileage in the city streets than you do now on the highway.
If you have rear end ratios that are 3.89:1 or lower (4.11, 4.56 etc) then you can get better mileage with an AOD. You will need to drop your existing ratio (stock) about 50% in order to maintain overall good mileage. Take your ratio (2.92) and multiply by 1.5 (4.38) to get the same highway mileage that you get now on the highway.

You will see some improvement with the AOD with your gears.
You most likely will have to start with a late model AOD (91 -93) and it should be modified to handle higher torque and horsepower loads.
It is an expensive modification to change over to the AOD so your money situation will help you with the decision.

Sorry for the hi-jack but I was curious about the AOD as well. Do you have to get the AODE to be able to manually shift into and hold 2nd gear? My only (minimal) experience with on was a short ride in an 89 Mustang GT. iirc there were detents for 1st, drive and OD but not second.

NO, you have to modify the valve body or buy one that has been modified.
Other than that you do the 1-2-1 shuffle shift.
