My first question is...will my Ford 9" that is under my 1966 Mustang fit under a Comet? Next, will my all brand new stainless brake lines I installed in the 1966 Mustang fit a Comet? I am under the impression that the 70's Mavericks and Comets were sitting on the 1965/66 Mustang chassis's? I bought a fred flintstone Mustang last year that turned out to need EVERY single body panel, but I agreed to build a drag race car for my teen daughter. So with a little effort we made the car look passable. We spent a ton of money making the Mustang SAFE, and solid, however our budget ran out before the bodywork. She did well in the bracket, finishing 9 out of 30 I think (me never building a race car, her never racing). It was a total family affair. The car still looked great from a few feet away...long story. our website created to document the season is www.swartsmotorsports.com
The mustangs 64 to presant have a different chassis...they do share some suspension componets accross various years.I believe your axle will fit but the spring pads will be in the wrong location for a mav/comet.Mustangs are wider then mavs, body wise as well as floor pan/eng compartments.
I spent the money and bought a NEW disc brake conversion for the Mustang, that was a Granada setup. I researched a site that said that Granada spindles and brakes are used as a conversion for Comets/Mavericks. So I would make that reuse ok. I would hate to have to lose all the money spent making the Mustang safe for racing. Try taking fred flintstone's car, strapping a rocket to it, and making it drive straight and stop when you want it to. That was over $1500 for all the parts and upgrades alone. Not sure. But since I am intending on getting this Comet GT Mongo found, I will either keep and restore, or clean it up and punt. I will post pics tommorow when I go see the car. The price is right up my alley!
A 66 Mustang rear will bolt right in to a Mav. I ran one for a lot of years. The later rears are wider but also will bolt in. You just need to use wheels with more backspace to keep the tires under the fenders.
The Granada spindles and brakes are the same as a Maverick. I believe the rear end is a bolt in,but it may be slightly wider.
They are not the exact same chassis, but they are very close kin. I'll reiterate that the rear is a bolt in affair. No welding or narrowing. Bolt in. It is only 3/4" wider. No big deal.
