I was reading some things around the internet lately, and I was wondering if Mavericks are considered muscle cars. It's got a v8, sure, but apparently some people only deem boats with 400ci engines "real" muscle cars. And even though during the 60s they had these huge 18 foot long heaps of metal with enormous engines, since during the 70s they enforced the clean air act, bringing out pony cars and a new definition to "muscle," wasn't a v8 all that was needed?
Even back in the 60s, there were v6 and 302 variations of the Mustang, and as far as I remember, no one claimed that wasn't "true" muscle car. Even today, they throw ugly fuel injected engines into even uglier modern stangs and chargers, yet THOSE are still considered muscle cars. Not to mention the sports car wannabe imports with 10+ cylinder engines. I thought muscle cars were supposed to be cheap, powerful cars, not ugly, wavy things that cost over $100,000 and resemble freaking LAMBOS.
If you look around today, everyone just seems to be talking out of their asses these days, "YEAH MY '06 MUSTANG IS TOTALLY A MUSCLE CAR EVEN THO IT HAS A FREAKING V6." "NO, YOUR UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME MAVERICK ISN'T A MUSCLE CAR BECAUSE IT'S NOT A BOAT AND DOESN'T GET OVER NINE THOUSAND HORSE POWER AMDFKJLJAE."
All I know is, my car is loud, it has a metal body, it's a v8, and it's sexy.
Does anyone have some REAL facts towards this subject and not just some chud bragging about his stupid Supra with a 4 foot spoiler, neons, and fart can exhaust claiming he knows what's muscle and what isn't?

If you think it is a muscle car, then it is.

I know guys who think their Mitzi Eclipses are muscle cars...

    (WE know they are wrong:tiphat:)

Mavericks were never marketed as muscle cars in the U.S.. Ford called them sporty economy cars. When the best drive train you could get in a car was a 140hp 2V 302, 3 speed manual and 3.00 open rear, that absolutely is NOT a muscle car IMO. Muscle had to be muscle from the factory.

That Supra just might embarrass you... and it's very easy to get twice the horsepower out of a V6 Mustang these days then a V8 Maverick came with stock. But you do have weight on your side.

These are nice classic cars that can be made to run very well, no doubt.

The answer is easy to answer if you slip back into the 1970's. If you had a maverick in high school, you were probably also considered a computer nerd and just didnt want your friends seeing you in one. I would say they are clearly not a muscle car. I also believe alot of these cars got crushed for that reason. If you told someone in the 1970's to buy 100 gt comets as a 35 year investment they would of thought your nuts. Who would of thought back then these cars would be so cool today.

    no...its a poney car...well can be if you install a v8!

though there are some cars i consider muscle cars that other will disagree...such as the 65-67 corvette stingrays or the 65-67 fastback mustanges...more notably "elenor"

to be muscle car is a look
to others its a definition of a midsize car with a back seat, that has a 350ci or bigger engine

Mavericks are the Tempo/Topaz of the 70's, Sorta like the Focus is today. They were cheap to buy, and cheap to fix. In the 70's they were a dime a dozen, but since the quality really sucked, they would rot out to nothing around here in less than 10 years.
Muscle car? not really, no matter how much you think they are cool, more of a Street Machine, then and now.

I look at it this way:

The Maverick was to the Mustang as the Nova was to the Camaro.

Kind of second in line in the food chain.

It certainly can be a muscle car if you decide to make it one. :thumbs2:

a 2 door maverick that has a v8 that has been modifyed for more power meets my deff of a muscle car.
If a car is asain its not a muscle car in my opinion
a 4 door car is not a muscle car (new chargers)
6 cyl mustangs are not muscle cars.
these are only my feelings of what muscle cars are. it really doesnt mater when i comes down to it. ive heard the maverick refereced as a sport compact car (hot rod magzine some years ago). i feel that the 2 door mav meets the same criteria as the fox body mustangs did in there respective eras.
so if you feel your car is a muscle car then it is. if you feel its a hot rod then it is.

Mine isn't, thats for sure. the definition of muscle car has become muddled with all these ricers and little crackerboxes on wheels coming out and the people who obsess over them won't rest easy untill they too have the distinction of muscle car. If you ask me, it doesn't matter what the definitions say about your car. when it comes to what your car is, you are the only person that matters. if others want to be impressed by a maverick, they can buy their own and impress themselves with it. it just gets into opinion too easy so just stick with what you want it to be. i want mine to be a 2 door 77 with a 200 six and an automatic transmission. (and mustang buckets) and that's what it is, so i'm happy.

Except the Nova had some muscle car powertrain options. Couldnt even get a Mav with a 4 barrel. I think the Nova was a muscle car. Big block available with a 4 speed. A Yenko 427 Nova ran low elevens on slicks. Thats a muscle car. Guess Chevy did a better job putting power in their economy chassis. I bet the Mav out sold it though.

well to me, a muscle car is a car with 300 hp and torque behind it, and two door. Has to be old of course. like 77 and down. new cars don't count in my opinion. all though they are making a good comeback now. and has to have that look of going fast while standing still.

Mines certainly not a muscle car, more of a community cruiser that i bring to shows and cruises. Now do i care what someone thinks of my Comet as in is it a muscle car or not- I DON'T CARE- i do care if i like it as it is, and yes i do and that's all that should matter.
