    hey guys,
I'm trying to pull the axles out of my mav. took the 4 nuts off and gave it a couple of pulls with no luck. any tips for me to get them out? also it looks like I can keep the brake pads and sh#$ intact while I pull the axles out...is this true?

    thanks
    c.b.

You can put the drum on backwards and lug nuts a couple turns and use the drum as a slide hammer. If that doesn't work rent a real axle puller made to pull axles. Yes, you can leave the backing plate and brake shoes intacted. No, the brake pads must come off

Like Jeff said. Turn the drum around and put some nuts on the studs and give it a couple of whacks like a slide hammer. This usually works.:)

hey thanks for the info. won't seem to matter mutch since I noticed the bearing plate bolt pattern is smaller on the car than the ones on the new axles I have. unless I can take the plates from the existing axles on the car and put them on the axles I'm trying to put in. but I think from what I'm reading that the axles will not fit. just to let you know what I'm trying to do. I purchased 5 lug axles out of a maverick to swap my 4 lugs out.

You would need smaller OD bearings - they might be available but I have never heard of it being done. I have used larger OD bearing to adapt shafts before - but never the other way around.

I'm talking Pads/Caliper not Shoes. He said he already removed the plate bolts and was wondering about removing "pads and stuff."

I believe he was referring to the rear, but either way, You still dont have to remove them to pull axles, Dont matter if its pads or shoes. :D

Might be a dumb question but don't you have to remove the rotor to get to the axle? Do you have to un-bolt the caliper to remove the rotor?

I think yellow mistakenly referred to his brake shoes as pads. When you mentioned pads, my mind automatically referenced to the front of the car. If he did have disc brakes on the rear, then yes you are correct, they would have to be removed first.

    Well said :)

Shoes are for drum brakes, pads are for disks.

If its factory then he would have shoes in the rear as posted in the picture above.

Either way tho, there is no axle on the FRONT of the car ;)
