hey. so it's been a while. New rear suspension is in, pertronix is in, new wheels and tires, door handles on, side views ready to go on as soon as gaskets come in (month and a half backorder and counting...), and I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting. Cutting the coils once i get off of here and gonna get an alignment tomorrow. That's the backstory. Question: Do you guys retorque your suspension at some point after installation? I was gonna do mine before the alignment, but I might just be making things harder than they need to be (it's my specialty). Thanks. been on the road since friday! already put 500 miles on it . gonna be retiring the olds as soon as i can get it to raleigh. With the pertronix i never have to worry about it starting right up now. The metal shop by my house is gonna give me a quote on milling my engine for the 2bbl when I go back up the mountain. If you see a two tone satin/flat black maverick with no rear bumber cruizin around, it's me lol. hey, do you know if I should retorque my suspension after a certain number of miles? or once it's done is it good to go?
you shouldnt have to retorque your suspension. retorques are usually for things that heat cycle like exhast bolts.
kewl! Thanks! I forgot my chilton's at home so finding all those specs again would've been a pain. Relearning how to post pictures and then i'll post some of the rims and stance to see what you think. When i got new tires put on the wheels they told me to retorque after 100 miles or so. I don't normally do this when I put wheels on. Is this only because they're new rims? (...and i get sucked into the forum yet again.)
Hope you didnt use "Advanced auto" parts. I had failure of not one but all front end parts from advanced auto. Uppers, lowers, outters, shocks started leaking hydraulic fluid, control valve became loose, all with in first 1000 miles. They gave me a warrenty on everything and they are going to replace it all with moog, but what a pain to do a second time around. Everything they sell is chinese made junk now. Next time Im going to wait at least 1000 miles before I do the alignment and make sure the parts hold up.
new wheels should be retorqued a few times. the tire store wants you to retorque or have them retorqued to cover them selves from a wheel coming loose.
nope. i shopped around for the stuff individually. all moog bushings and new lower arms. LMM Upper arms. AK perches. Advanced auto coils (they gave me the wrong ones and I'm cutting them haha). General Spring leafs. Did use Advanced auto U-bolts (but how can you screw up a U-bolt? lol) Already put over 1000 miles on the front suspension, just broke 500 miles on the rear suspension and wheels. word. thanks! I'll retorque for a while til they get some age on them. Glad i won't always have to do that. I take my wheels off alot - there's alot of kewl stuff to look at behind them
Have a little over 100,000 miles on my Advance Auto u bolts that I put in when I swapped my car to the 5 lug rear. No problems... The only thing I ever have a problem with in the suspension is the lower control arm eccentric bolts. They always seem to move and make my wheels go toe out every 15,000 miles or so. Next time I get the car aligned, I'm going to drive straight home and put a couple of good tack welds on them.
Thanks bud! To dissuade the comments about how primer doesn't protect against rust i'll just add that it's actually John Deere Tractor Paint hahaha. I suck at painting so it does look like primer... Should be good against rust tho. I have a few coats on everything.
