I live at 6000ft and have heard that some types of carbs do not perform as well as they should at that altitude. I have an Edelbrock 1405 600cfm and was told that its crap. I will need the carb to sit on a stroked 347 in the near future. any thoughts/ideas? thanks!

its just a matter of leaning out the carb for the thinner air at high altitude. the edelbrock is a decent carb. you can put bigger metering rods in it to lean it out. is an easy thing to do. now a holey carb can make a little bit more power than an edelbrock. the 600 cfm should be just fine on a 347.

Seeing that you're at the Springs, I'd seriously think about going EFI. It'll better be able to compensate for the altitude changes in your neighborhood (6,000 to 14,000 ft in case you're going to run it up to Pike's Peak.) Or at the very least talk to someone around there that's done the Pikes Peak run with a carbed vehicle to see how they do it.
