How well would a BOSS 302 fit in a 70 Maverick? Using the stock 8.206 deck. I am concerned with head width and headers (What make?) while retaining the stock shock towers. My next question would then be, how about a tall deck 302 (8.7 deck)? Thanks.
I would expect it to fit fine, the Cleveland-style exhaust ports point down so headers should still fit even though it's wider overall. Motor Trend put a Boss 302 in a 1970 Maverick in 1970. Check out articles.maverickgrabber.com
302Boss in mav according to some sources the boss 302 is only 1/2 of an inch wider than the stock 302. And it is not as wide as the 351W. It should fit with no problem. I'm wondering about the exhuast manifolds. Any ideas from others?
more boss stuff I found the article. The Boss 302 is 0.5 inches wider, 1 inch taller and 40lbs heavier. The height is likely based on stock intakes for both. Length is the same depending upon the water pump used! Good luck
Boss Mav About 10 yrs ago there was a article of a guy that put a Boss 302 into a 72 Mav. It fit real easy and required no cutting. He was pulling mid 11s with it. Ford had planned on putting the Boss 302 into the Maverick, but they worried that it would take away from Mustang sales. Especially when the Mav sold so well right out of the chute.
Boss Mav The article says he used 69-70 Boss 302 Stang headers. he also has manual steering and front disc brakes.
Thank you all for the responses. It has helped me in making my decision. To Mavman, PAW sells Hooker Super Comp headers for the 69-70 BOSS 302. I will be using these in my car now that I know they will fit. Thanks again.
Brain fart...I almost forgot that the mustang/maverick chassis are real close in design, therefore headers will sometimes interchange.
Boss Mav. Maverick_70 Be carefull if your looking at a 8.7 deck hieght block,Thats getting close to the 9.2 deck of a 351 Cleveland and that will make you learn a new langauge when installing headers! Not to mention spark plugs!I've raced a cleveland Mav for years and found it refreshing to go back to a 302.With all they have done with aluminum heads it has made it a very efficent engine and lighter wieght.I still have the set of headers if anyone knows someone who needs them.
hweiss would the headers work for the bogus 302 boss with cleveland 2V heads? If so, I would be very interested. Email me at wm12345@hotmail.com
maverick_70, I don't know what you are planning but I'm going to build a boss type motor for the fun, actually it seems as it will be more trouble than I first thought. Anyways I wouldn't trust that the headers from a mustang will work in a mav, the must. shock towers are wider than the mavs. They offer super comps for the 351w in a mustang but they will not come close to fitting a 351w in a mav. Tubular Automotive makes headers for this application (302 w/351c heads) and depending on what heads you use they have 2 different sizes, 1 7/8" for the 2v heads and 2" for the 4v heads. I've been told from a few people that it fits pretty good.
you can but shorty headers for just about any motor that will let the exuast people work around all motor or tranny problems in the way
Mav70, I have a Boss 302 in my mid engined car. When I first got it, it had some mod'd Boss heads and it was a pig on the street at low end...... bogged and was miserable to try and drive...... Eventually I scrapped the 4V heads with their HUGE ports, and went with a set of Aussie 2V heads! These are the same as US 351C heads, BUT, they have closed chambers, like the Boss and 4V-351C heads. The 2V head ports are PLENTY big for the 302..... Once I swapped those on, the car became driveable! I use the car on the street, not the track. To get it to work on the 302 block, I had to get a "Street Boss" intake from a company that is now OOB. However, I thought someone in Ark. was recasting the manifolds again and they are reasonably priced. You could get one of these manifolds, a set of Aussie or US 2V heads, a good cam, some flat top pistons, the headers that someone mentioned already, and go to town!!!! The heads must be modified for Windsor style watering... but that is a cinch for a machine shop. Many articles written on this already.... since 1970 or so! Doing it this way, you save yourself the hassle of searching for unobtainium parts, that probably won't run for you anyway.... unless you want high RPM stuff.....then go for it. However, you shouldn't discount this option...... a buddy has a set of the Aussie heads on his 351C and he runs 160MPH class in Silver State events...... they work! Have fun!!! Whatever you decide.... Steve
