Does any body know if its possible to buy a Maverick in Mexico then make it a legal ride in the U.S.?
I would imagine so. If you have the right paperwork. They bring cars in from Canada and Europe a lot.
Depends on where you are taking it. Some states let you get a "bonded" title. In Mississippi it will cost you a total of around $130 between paying for a "title bond" and then getting it registered. After you register it, in a couple of weeks they'll issue you a real title, which you can then transfer just like any other.
Its been a few years, but last time I checked into importing a car into the US, you have to deal with 2 agencies. The EPA and DOT. I was trying to import one of those MAverick wagons. The car has to conform to the safety and emission laws that were into effect the year the car was manufactured. However, there are waivers for cars over 20 years old for one, and 25 for the other. I dont remember which was which but it wont matter in your case. It should be just a formality to fill out the paper work.
It doesn't sound that hard to do... I'll let you guys know if I do it. I'll go get info at the local DPS.
I would check with the DMV on the paperwork to register it and see what requirements there are as far as safety inspections are concerned. Every state has it's own rules. I would also check with customs where you plan to bring it in at. I live in Texas on the Mexican border. Here they have clamped down on going across the border and you have to show proof of ownership and insurance or you cannot bring the vehicle across. This has really cut down on stolen vehicles disappearing across the border. It can be done though as I have brought back a Mexican made Mustang.
I have a Mexican Mav I will some day bring in to the USA and the info I got is that importing it will have to be done by a customs brokerage agency and since the vehicle is over 25 years old it is exempt of regulations that would otherwisw apply to newer cars. Once it has cleared customs I will be taking the paperwork to my state DMV office, register it and get a tittle. Mexican Mavericks are also ligther weighwise. Any Ideas??? Although they also require more work to restore as they have had a much harder life due to almost non-existent maintenance practices. I know mine will be different because for one, mine reads kilometers instead of miles and also it is a 4 speed from factory, and reputable copper- iron engine block.
oh yeah! a wide ratio toploader, that means you got a 3.01 Dana 44 differential. My owner's manual says it so.
I got my father looking for one in Saltillo Mexico, I called hem last week to let him know, and he told me that the next door guy had just sold his 1972 302 4 speed Mav. in great shape in and out for about 1200 bucks!! so now he'll be looking for another one. too bad!
Take your title and register it in your state... Get the plates and just drive it accross the boarder...Ya think the federalies can tell where it was first sold?
I went to the local DPS office and asked about the process, they say I go to Mexico, get the vehicle, then when crossing the border stop at the Customs office, they will charge tax according to the price of the car, the lady said it would be around 50 bucks for that year (1972) or so. Then I have to come to the DPS office again and fill this form and pay around 130.00 and I get plates and title. It does not sound hard to do at all ha?
