Ok so I went and picked up the Bronco rear end on Tuesday, looking at it I see it is a small bearing housing, C7AW-E 28 spline carrier , it is not limited slip but appears to be a 3.50 ratio gear, I am looking into getting a back cover as the one on it was dented pretty bad and I have removed it, 53 1/2 inches outside flange to flange, I will also be looking into axles as the ones I have are larger bolt pattern, I do have a question, are there any J/Y swaps I can do to get disc brakes on it?
    Thanks :tiphat:

their is several ways to get junk yard disk brakes.
you can get brackets (i cant remember the companys that offer them) that allow you to use the disk brakes off of sn95 mustangs. you can get the bolt pattern redrilled in the truck axles to what ever you need. just make sure the brake rotor fits over the larger truck axle.

You have a 9 inch rear that has a back cover?

Thanks Bryant, I am going to try and go hunting the J/Y this weekend, see whats out there as far as a limited slip, there are quite a few 1/2 ton Ford trucks in the early 70's in the local yard and a couple of cars, one Galaxy I know is a 70, any of those could be limited slip and 28 spline.

Not any more! I cut it off, just going to buy a replacement cover and weld it on, it was not a removable one but dented so badly it had to come off.

Unless you're going to do some serious road racing, I'd just rebuild the drums that are on it now. That's what I did on mine, I used the rear drums that the donor 9 I bought for it's trac loc 3.50 chunk. This was an 81 Bronco rear with 11x2.5 rear drums.

Confused???? :hmmm: went to the local P n P this morning as I know they had a 1970 Galaxie with a V8 in it, thought it might have the rear end I was looking to scavenge parts from, upon looking under it I saw a bolt on rear cover and moved on, I sure thought it would have a 9" under there, looked at a few early 70's trucks also, same story, bolt on covers, I guess I need to read up on the subject more.

The late 60's early 70s were the years that the 9 were found to be under everything big :)

Yeah so I thought, but where did the bolt on rear covers come in?

the trucks were probably f250s and those would have dana 60 diffs with 8 lug wheels. if they were 5 lugs then they should have been 9" no bolt on covers.

as far as i know the 70 galaxy should have a 8" or 9" with no bolt on cover. what was the covers shape?

Didn't some of the big Galaxies also use the Dana 60 rear?

That was a Dana 44 under the Galaxie I've had one 71 Galaxie that had one. Apparently they were used when the 9's were in short supply

Looked to be like the Dana 44 under the '70 galaxie, was def. a bolt on back cover.

From '67 up all the full size models with 240, 289, 302 & 351 had bolt on rear covers, no 9" unless it had a big block, or was '66/earlier... I owned a '67 with 289, '69 & '70 with 302 and another '70 with 351, all had the small rear, as did my pop's 71 with 351...

Depending on year, these rears used either 8.5" or 8.7" ring & pinion, weren't very strong and have no performance parts avail...

The later V8 Granada's used them as well...
