Can anyone tell me if 1971-73 Mustang Cougar bucket seats are the same as bucket seat high backs as in a 1971-72 grabber and if so are the seat track the same?
They appear to be almost, if not exactly identical. The Mustang rails will not fit. The only bucket seat rails that fit in a Maverick or Comet with out mods are Maverick or Comet rails. -Corbin
The Mustang seats are identical (and I believe the rails are too but can't swear to it)...The Cougar seats are different...
Well, I wouldn't know either, but I bought a set of Mustang Buckets for my 70 Grabber, and they still had the rails on them. They are wierd.. They don't have bolts attached through the frame of the seat and go through the floor and then put a nut on the bottom like the Mav rails do. Instead, they have flat metal (where it rests on the floor) with holes for bolts you tighten to go through to a welded nut on the floor. The fronts are also bent down to contour with the slope on the seat platform. The stangs have a welded in platform for the seats to bolt to. All this sounds really complicated but that is because of the way in which I worded it. If I think about it, I'll get a pic of the rails some time. -Corbin
I have seen 71 Stang seats in a 70... As in standing there when they were put in. If you line up the Stang brackets with the floor pan of the Maverick, the seats either have to bolt down slightly to the left or right of center. You have to do some modding to get them centered. The set that I watched installed were bolted down slightly inboard. Once the interior was together, it wasn't noticable. Personally, I would have tweaked it a little and centered the seats. Dave
Hmmm, for a lot of years I used '69 Mustang high backed buckets with the Mustang rails in my '70 Mav.
Since my '70 originally had a bench seat there was no mounting holes at the center of the car near the hump. And no raised area in the floor board near the trans tunnel. Front to rear the Mustang brackets almost line up with the bench seat mounting holes. Bolted one end down using an existing hole, drilled another hole to match the rail. Had to drill four holes at the tunnel, reinforced them top and bottom with some large fender washers. Since the area near the tunnel isn't raised the seats will lean towards the center. Made some spacers out of 1" steel pipe and used long bolts to get the seats straight and level. I now have aftermarket seats in the car that were designed for a new Mustang, the old Mustang rails bolted right up to them.
If Mustang and Maverick seats are identical then I should be able to use covers from 71 to 73 Mustang on my 73 buckets.Right??
Rivera's upholstery did a great job recovering my 73 bucket. They are right here in Cumming on Rte 9 ... He is the guy that owns the General Lee replica ... He charged me $165 to do the driver bucket from scratch and just about perfectly matched the passenger bucket and rear seat ..
Thanks Dan. I can get a pair of covers for bout that, tho they would not match rear seat perfect.I will give him a call when time comes.
