I just found out i have a FMX tranny i dont know much about them other then they are old and dont have much in the aftermarket parts department is their any positives to haveing a FMX over a C4 or should i just use my C4?
They made FMXs all the way up till 79. I have had many of them and they are almost bulletproof. They are heavy due to the cast iron housing but reliable. The drawback is there are not a lot of aftermarket parts for them.
Steve, What are you going to be using it for? What engine? Has it already been installed in your car? If you are going to try to swap it into a Maverick it is going to be an expensive installation.
OK cool, I knew they were through 79 due to the fact I have had several 77-79 T-Birds and Cougars. After that most everything went to Fox bodies.
I cant see it fitting in a Mav trans tunnel?? Am I wrong?? I only ever had one and we used it as a conversation piece while it sat on the shop floor for years. Used to joke about how stupid heavy it was and how our salted roads turned the cast iron and aluminum mated surfaces into giant furry balls of corrosion. disimilar metals are not a good design for around here.LOL.
It's a shame you are so far away. I have a freshly rebuilt C4 that I am going to give away for $450 to get rid of it. I don't want it in the garage because I know it will just sit forever - and i get tired of hearing them whine to me about the days they used to be in a car doing something. The transmission used to be a loaner and the last time in came back i went completely through it. All new bushings, thrustwashers, frictions, steals, seals internal and externals and even a new modulator. It is all set up for column shifter and ready to install and use.
They were installed at the factory in some of the early 70's V8 Mavs. I seem to recall a semi automatic version too.
The only automatic used in Maveicks and Comets were C4s. The C4 in 1970 was the only "semi-automatic" (manual shifted) Ford ever produced. The FMX was used in larger cars with larger engines. A well built stock C4 with an auxillary cooler will work in your application and be less problematic to install. The FMX is longer, uses a larger flex plate and bell housing and will need a different crossmember and a shorter driveline. There is very little aftermarket support for the FMX transmission.
