The c4 behind the 351w is acting a little strange. This is my first time using this c4.....

In drive when I go from a stop it feels like the trans slips quite a bit. If I take off in 1st I feel no slipping.

When manually shifting the trans slips for a whole second in between gears.

Is this normal for a stock c4?
Stock trans with a b&m z gate shifter.

No, that's not normal. The C4 feels like all the other automatics when it shifts

    Any suggestions on a fix?
    Rebuild?
Good valve body cleaning and shift kit?
    Modulator valve issue?

Cleaning the valve body might help, but if it has an overrun or flare where it reves up in between the 2 to 3 shift it's usually worn high gear clutches..... If it does it between the 1 and 2 shift it could be a worn or out of adjustment intermediate band.....

Frank the weird thing is that it doesn't flare up when its in drive......

In drive feels like 1st slips real bad....shifts well

Manually shifting 1st feels fine no slips.....however when manually shifting I get a flare between shifts.

Weird it doesn't slip when manually in 1st and doesnt flare between shifts when in drive.......

Unfortunately it's sound like it is in need of a complete rebuild, just too many different problems going on there..... You could try cleaning the valve body and getting everything work freely in it, it may help..... I don't think a shift kit would necessarly help any of the issues you are having.....

Ok I appreciate the info. I'm gonna run it as is for a bit and hope it holds up. Were pulling the motor in spring to do a striker so guess that's a good time to either get it built or buy another one.

    Thanks

I rebuilt my 1970 c-4 in my garage with no special tools. Bought a couple books on it w/lots of photos, VERY helpful. I took LOTS of photos to help remember how to put back together. Bought ALL parts from nearby trans. supply wherehouse. Couple hundred or so for parts and shift kit. Still shifts hard like it should. My first time ever building trans and it was fairly easy! If anything tightening your clutch bands to specs should help. If not the bands are probably burned and slip causing flaring. I'm no expert but this is my experience with C-4. (H) servo is the one to have. Got mine @ junkyard. YOU CAN DO IT! You'll be glad you did.
