hi guys,so I installed a c5 with a deep pan dumped 7 quarts of oil in it and it wont engage.Does it need more oil?The dip stick shows its over full but I sat there for a while playing with it and it seens like the oil is just sitting in the oil pan cause I drained some and the oil is cool like just out of the bottle.

If the level is over full and doesn't drop when the engine is started it isn't pumping... Did you add fluid to the converter prior to install???

7 quarts is not enough. its hard to say how much you do need sense you dont know how much is in the converter.

are you sure the dip stick shows full vs just getting wet from atf on the dipstick tube when its being inserted and pulled out?

9 quarts seems a bit much for a C4 that has had fluid in it already.. but it has been a while since I've filled either a fresh one or done an oil change on one.. and a +2 qt deep sump pan might put you near that amount. Be sure to also run it through the gears to completely fill the valvebody and clutches with oil.

If you didn't sufficiently prefill the TC.. the pump may not self prime and the unit will run dry. Which is never a good thing for the pump and internals.

Was this unit rebuilt?(completely dry).. or just swapped over to this motor after a pan/filter change?(partial fill)

I'm thinking the pump may be air locked so isn't pulling the fluid into the converter, even if there isn't enough fluid in the pan to fill the converter the level should drop to below the add... Maybe if it sets awhile it'll be OK...

Next time you start it if the fluid doesn't drop shut it off and wait longer, like over night then try again...

I let it set for like a week and still nothing,i disconnect one of the lines and they have oil going thru...so imam just pull it back out and recheck everything and fill the converter. When I changed the bellhousing the pump came forward but I but it back carefully so not sure.
    :hmmm:

If the oil is circulating through the cooler lines the pump is working, you have other problems...

Did you get the converter in properly...It has to engage the dogs on the pump gear. If not, you have damaged the pump and or converter...Pull the trans back out and double check it...
