I have a 74 maverick, 200. It sputters bad and stalls out when i try to start it. when i get it to start and i give it some gas (in gear drive or reverse) It sputters and dies. It has a rebuilt carb on it and the timing was just set with a gun. There is a round flap on top of the carb, it is not closing, is that a problem. I have changed the fuel pump and filter with no change. I have changed the spark plugs, I noticed the bottom of the carb is covered in gas when i run the car for a long time. I am assuming a gasket is bad, but i cant be sure thats whats wrong, any ideas???? Thanks for any help in advance...
sounds like your rebuilt carb is a dud. there should not be fuel anywhere on the out side of it. the round flap on top is the choke plate. it should be closed when the motor is cold. most likely the choke is out of adjustment. also the idle mixture is not right either.
I got a new holly single carb for it. I am also about to replace the egr valve. Once that gets done it should be better. Once i put the new carb in i noticed a big difference but the car still sputters at a certain point during acceleration in either drive or reverse. I am assuming vaccum problem, its just hard to pin point it.
