So i pulled the starter off today and too a look at the fly wheel. Some of the teeth seem pretty worn. Can a starter related problem cause this
Misalignment or the wrong starter can cause this....I'm sure somebody will chime in that knows the different starters than i do
I just got the car a ffew weeks afo and it stopped starting. So I'm under the assumtion iits thw correct starter but that can be wrong. How much wear is normal for a fly wheel? If anybody knows. One thing I did notice is that the wear was uneven
any way to get a photo of teeth.. 6 cyl or 8 straight drive or automatic..,if the ring gear is just 1/8 wear on the teeth.not a problem...if the bendix gear is not entering the ring gear far enough..you may have a short starter..follow comments i wrote in tech section entitled right starter for 302
Adam, it can just be a lot of starting and stopping. I've had to replace a lot of ring gears, or flex plates ( depending on if you have a standard trans or automatic ) and it seems that this is more city driving than anything else. When you turn off your engine it is going to stop in the same place ( several ) depending on a 6cyl or a V8. Each time the starter engages, it has to line up it's gear teeth to the gear on the engine. Many times of doing this will eventually wear a spot in the gear on the flywheel or flex plate. This is not an uncommon problem. Replace the flywheel or flex plate and make sure the starter drive gear has no chips or rounded teeth!
Hey tthanks for the reply. I was just wondering if the sstarter made it worse cause I'm pretty sure the starter is no longer engaging so I thought the wear wasnt helping the situation
adam send a photo email if you can,,i cannot open attached thumbnails..i had my problem with 302..look for wear shadow on bendix gear and matching shadow on ring gear..just to see if the bendix gear is entering the ring gear at least 1/2 way...if the teeth on ring gear are wallowed severely....turn the engine by hand to move the flywheel to a fresh location that looks pretty good,,try the starter,,the starter will spin the fly wheel to the worn out location and stop,LMK!
Got some bad news for ya. You can't just replace the flex plate on the 200 I6. The ring gear is part of the torque converter. You will need to replace the Torque converter to fix this problem. Then after you have done that make sure you have a new starter so it doesn't chew up the new starter ring. Sorry for the bad news sir.
