I was driving the Mav today with the windows down and noticed a clanking sound, especially bad on bad roads, sounded like the hub caps werent secure and were banging around on the rim...

is this a common problem? is this the sound i'm hearing, i'm almost positive it is, doesnt sound like a rock in there either. What did you guys do to fix this? etc?

    thanks (y)

If you think its the hub caps take them off and drive if it was them the sound will go away. You should hope that is your problem the if its part of the suspension thats usely not a good sign.

Might have a rock or two between the hubcap and rim.

Best solution...buy some Cragar SS or Torque Thrust IIs and fix it RIGHT!

If it's just a rattling or clicking sound, it's likely that it's just the grease-caps. If it's a loud "clanking" sound, it could be something more serious...

always start with the easiest fixes...

look to see if anything look sout of places first

.take off the hubcaps....and wheels...check them...

then put the wheels back on and take it for a spin....

    etc...

    good luck

By all means, pull off the hubcap and check things out. I had that happen to me once with one of my Mustangs. I thought a rock was rolling around in the hubcap. Turns out it was a lugnut that had come off. Worse case senerio is it could be a problem with the wheel it's self or a suspension problem. You also might want to check the brake calipers to see if they are rattling. Mine used to sound like a horse galloping down a paved road until we got them fixed. The rattling used to speed up or slow down depending on hoe fast I was driving.

it sounds like it's coming from all 4 corners... but it was a country vehicle for a while, so figured a few rocks from the road coulda popped up

I didnt have time to do anything to the mav tonight except throw the new tag on it n do a few errands in it, had to tear apart the front end on our BII (Finally lifted it a bit :bouncy: )

I"ll try to check that stuff out tomorrow, thanks guys!

I've had many noisey hub caps in the past. Some liked to squeek and some did make a clanking sound. Just make sure thats where the problem is before you dismiss it.

Check the upper rear shock mounts.
The upper mounts are not very strong on our cars and can break. This leaves the shock mounted only at the bottom and clanking around under the car. (still vertical, it doesn't fall downward)
You describe the sound mine made when a shock mount pulled out.
    Good luck
    Dave

Also, check the flux capacitor. That thing can make a strange racket when it is malfunctioning. (y)

sorry guys, just had to lighten it up a little...

you know.....the muffler bearing would certainly cause a racket.....but if it is at all corners of the car....i would think it was the wheel bearings instead

I plan on checking around and diagnosing the problem...dont have time for it today but i'll get on it sometime soon...

It isn't a ujoint, i unfortunatly know what that sounds like, driveshafts AND axles

It's not coming from just hte rear, that's why i dismissed shock mounts n such, which reminds me..i need to get down to the shop to weld on axle and frame mounts for shocks

I'll check the swaybar stuff, i always remove them on trucks, but a car is a different story

I'll let you guys know, thanks! (y)

Check the brake shoes, the keepers may have came off and the shoes could be clanking around in the drum.
