i want to put a toploader in my car. i know that the original clutch linkage can be hard to find so i am wondering what alternatives there are. i found this site on how to make a cable clutch work with a toploader. http://www.mustangsteve.com/scattershield.html
is there any mustang parts that are easy to modify for the maverick? or is it best to hold off installing the trans until i can find all maverick stuff

    Do you have the toploader?

Call me crazy, but if I was considering the cable clutch setup, I would use the 5 speed tranny it was intended for and save some headaches as well as fuel (overdrive).

I am sure you could make a cable setup work with a toploader. Someone else would have to clue you in though. I have never done it.

On my 75, I went from C4 to toploader.
I found the z-bar, but couldn't find the pedal assembly.
I used my auto pedal assembly and hybrid in a Falcon/Mustang clutch pedal. A little grinding, welding, and making some bushings.
If I did it today, I would use roller bearings instead of bushings.

Anyway, it can all be done, just depends on what parts you have now and how much fabbing you can do.

Btw: I might be able to come up with a set of Mav pedals.
No promises, but my uncle was trying to sell a set back at the Stang show this spring. He may still have them.

Hey StephenAuto krafters sells all the stuff you need for the Z bar(equalizer bar) including the frame mount I believe,You will still need to get the clutch pedal set elsewhere though.

Yes I already have the toploader. I would be interested in the pedals if he still has them.

Thanks for the heads up. Wouldn't I still need to find the mount on the engine side though?

Yes you would but I believe NPD or mustangs unlimited may have that component.

I thought the engine side ball stud was a maverick specific part, mustang ones are different a different size. If I am wrong let me know, I would rather use the linkage over the cable.

Thanks, I will look into getting a Z-bar from Autocrafters and a ball stud from NPD or mustang unlimited. Then all I have to find is the pedals, or is there anything I need? A hurst shifter came with the trans so I am good there. I have also noticed that the speedometer cable hole is on the opposite side of the trans, will the stock cable plug into the trans or do I need to find a longer one?

I think Mustangsteve has a good reputation on other forums. His cable clutch conversion kit sells quite often for older Mustangs. The technique, in his article on converting a new, after market bellhousing, can be used to convert a stock bellhousing. I have T-10 that is going in my '73 and I plan to use a cable clutch. I have eveything to use the z-bar, but I want to use the cable clutch because I have a lit less header issues with the cable setup.

According to what I have gleaned from some of the info on this site, the cable will reach but It may break eventually due to it gaining an extra bend in it to reach the toploader.I would think getting a cable for a t-10 from a mustang may solve the problem but,its just a theory of mine.I dont know if it is actually longer or will mate to the maverick speedo head.Just a thought hope it helps you.

You don't have that problem if you do this to your bellhousing/scatter shield.

    http://www.mustangsteve.com/scattershield.html

You only have one bend. You convert your clutch fork to be a puller instead of a pusher.
