So, in getting the coil rewired and running the power to it from the harness coming from the firewall, I noticed that it got the coil very hot and the wires going to the pertronix ignitor got hot as well. I noticed that when I did this, I inadvertedly left the ignition switch in the on position from when I was tracing the hot lead coming from it. After letting the coil get cold I went and started the engine but it has a bad miss now. Did I damage my coil or pertronix? Is it normal for the coil to get hot as well as the pertronix gizmo? Can someone give me some input? Thanks guys
The coil is essentially a step up transformer,it steps up the voltage to fire the plugs,if it is left on it will get hot because it has nowhere for the voltage to go,it is just sitting there waiting to discharge,I did the same thing once on my motorbike,it fried the coil ,try another coil to see if your miss goes away,when fooling with anything electrical always dicconnect the battery
Does the instructions for the Petronix tell you to bypass the resistor wire for the coil. I have heard that you can source a 12v circuit for the module but I thought the coil still needed the dropping resistor...:16suspect
Depends which Pertronix he has. The V8 Pertronix I requires a minimum 1.5 ohms coil primary resistance. Any less and you need to add a resistor. The Pertronix instructions explain this. Unless his setup is like mine where I just use the Pertronix to trigger my Mallory HyFire box.
