How do you remove the column shift lever from an automatic? Does this release the detent and allow it to shift freely?

There is a nut on the linkage that you remove and this will allow the linkage to be removed. Sometimes it is covered in grime and hard to see.

Removing the column shifter and installing a floor shifter will move the detents to the new shifter. Those detents are there to keep it from going into the wrong gear as you shift (they are called quadrants). The detents (spring loaded) are in the transmission but there are no positive stops except to keep it from going past the Park and Low gear positions.
