    Hi guys

I am ready to purchase a nice new gas cap for my 1975 Comet 2 door, 250 il 6. Mine seems to be wearing an age-damaged 1968 version. I assume its a '68 cap because the chrome ring is thinner and has a thin-ribbed outer edge. Anyway, I found one for sale locally that has the Comet logo against a red reflector, inside of a black circle with a thick chrome outer ring. It's similar looking to my 1968 version except the outer chrome edge is wider. Does this sound accurate to my year Comet? Also, should I be concerned if the back side of the gas cap has four tabs instead instead of two tabs? I don't know which is correct. The current 1968 style cap with two tabs seems difficult to put on easily so I assume the four tab would be correct. Please help.

I did find out that the gas cap with only two tabs makes a tighter snugger fit. I have two to play with, the '68 style (4 tabs) and a mid 70's style (2 tabs). So does anyone know if my straight six model would have the two tab version and if so would it have the word Comet on it, or just the reflective Mercury logo ?

I would say a 1975 Comet should have the 4 tab gas cap.

I believe the one that Don referenced is what belongs on my comet because I found it in my trunk and its plainer than the fancier one with comet written on it. So I think the previous owner decided to upgrade. But it is hard to thread it into the filler neck because it has the four tabs and the hole its going into only has two slots. Also it doesn't sit straight when snugged closed, it is tilted to the right a little. So I'm guessing that any other two tab style comet cap should work properly but I don't want to buy it and find out it doesn't fit or is crooked. Were there caps with the word comet on it made for the '75 model too, or did they only come with the style that Don showed me from ebay? It seems this is a cap for the inline cars and maybe the 302's got the fancier cap. Anyone know??

Here is mine. Don't know what year or trim. This is the Comet cap that I like the best, so I use it.

Rusty, is that a two or four tab on the back side? That one is my favorite style too.

Just 2. Which matches my factory 2-tab filler neck (when installed, it is upright and flush).

I think you can swap filler necks to the 2-tab style.

Here is a nice one for a good price: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Me...t=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

Here is an insanely priced one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-NOS-19...t=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

    Similar looking 4-tab style: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-s-Merc...t=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

The problem with the ones like mine is that the paint fades behind the plastic. So finding a used one is tricky. I found mine at a swap meet, $50. It is the best I have seen, aside from NOS. But even some of the NOS ones are scuffed up from being tossed around in the box. The plastic centers are re-popped by hand ($200), http://www.emblemagic.com/. So if you want a perfect one, you could take it apart, re-chrome the outside and replace the center with a new one.

The third ebay ad, the four tab version, looks different than the others. It has a thicker chrome ring. Why are they different? Is thicker ring version more correct for '75? I thought the others, thinner ring, were the 1968 caps. The one I'm looking to buy looks exactly like the first ebay ad. That's what I'm hoping will work correctly with my comet.

That is the first cap that I have seen, with Comet, spelled out on it. I guess that is what I get for having a Maverick.:tiphat:

You can always change the fuel tank neck to fit whatever cap you have.

Isn't there a vented vs. unvented issue with early/late gas caps?
