Well, me and my dad were out in 110 degree weather a coupla weeks ago, driving along highway 43 in CA. Well, earlier, the overflow reservoir had fallen into the fan blade (it wasn't the original, just a jerry rig someone had shoved in there... never had a problem until then)

Anyway, we pressed on to Hanford (where he had an appointment) and everything was fine.... we were losing water, but I figured we'd stop and put more in (he was driving)

Well, we got the apt. stuff done, and went to a parts store as the car had been rather hard to start, acted like the battery terminals were dirty. So, while I was in the parts store, he had the ****ing car running

Well, it lost a *LOT* of water..... I kept trying to suggest that we stop, but he wouldn't listen... kept on going back, and long about 6 miles outside hanford, BAM.... lower hose blows off, steam everywhere.

The engine was making a kinda racket beforehand. For just a few seconds but I *KNEW* that was the finish....

well, we got the old girl stopped, and I had to go to a couple of farmers houses to call for help. First house cold shouldered me. Second house had a couple of *extremely* kind folks who let me call my brother in law with their phone and wouldn't take any money. They even gave us both big glasses of ice water.... which my dad needed considering he's 71.

Well, my bro in law showed up and we couldn't get the car to start... the starter wouldn't spin the motor fast enough... you'd hear SKREE skree SKREE skree from the passenger side...

well, we got her home, I changed the starter and still the same.... the neighbor next door said it sounded like we'd got it hot and the rings were scraping the hell out of the cylinder walls....

He suggested as a temporary remedy "solvent and oil" to break it lose but it "would definitely smoke some"

(He was a racing mechanic in Mexico, so.... )

Well, no matter what we've done to the car, it still makes the SKREE skree noise and won't spin fast enough to fire up.

Any ideas? Can I tear this engine down and salvage this block or are the cylinders probably too far gone? By Salvage I mean "hone / bore out the cylinders until any scrapes/ peening is gone"

Or am I just gonna hafta get another engine?:cry:

From your description I would not put any money into the engine now in the car.

Pull it apart, check the bores for damage.(cracks, scoreing, discoloration etc...)If you find any,the engine is toast at that point.Cost more to repair it than it would to replace it,considering there is likely bearing/crank damage as well due to the extreme heat.Sorry.The racket is most likely the starter grinding the teeth off the ring gear because the engine is siezed up.Which means its done.

If it's seized up you can try filling the compression chamber with brake fluid to work the pistons loose, but that's pretty extreme, and you'll still have to tear it down. If you do it and let it soak in a while and can then turn the crank with a breaker bar, you might not be in too bad of shape.
