So i just bought this maverick a couple days ago. i pulled the motor and the cylinders are rusted. i guess the car sat for years without heads on it and this is what happened  motor looks fresh though since its been sitting for many years and pistons are stamped 30 over. any good tips to remove cylinder rust? can i do it without taking the pistons out? motor is not locked up though, it turned a little bit when i took the flex plate off.

also can 289 heads work with a 351? people put 351`heads on 289s so i dont see why not the other way around. thanks :)

Take the pistons out and hone it with a flex hone. They look pretty bad, may not be able to get all that off without boring the block again.

We run 1964 289 heads on a circle track 351W all the time. You have to drill the head bolt holes to 1/2". We always convert to screw in studs and guide plates with full roller rockers so can't help on stock style rockers that would work. We put 1.94/1.60 Chevy Stainless Manley Race Flo valves in them and port the crap out of them. It helps raise the compression but limits your upper RPM range. You can get the intake flange area ported out to match a Fel-Pro1262 but by the time you're an inch into the port you've lost some room or you'll hit water. I port into the push rod area until it's really thin then sleeve it with a common drinking straw and epoxy the intake runner in that area if needed. A Fel-Pro 1250 gasket may be a better choice for a street head.

With all the good aftermarket heads out there, you will spend as much (or more) on making a set of 289 heads work as buying a new set ready to go.

Yeah,I`ll agree w/ SPark, get after market hds & you may have to ditch that blk because It does`nt look like .040 will clean it up,& I don`t like to go .060 on small blk. fords.

Well they use vinegar to remove rust on sheet metal, ought to work on cast iron as well... Remove oil pan then use a spray bottle to spray cylinders, this may take two or three treatments over a few days... Once it's cleaned rinse with water, blow it out and load it up with WD40 or similar... At this point you can turn it over to inspect for damage from the rust...

My Cleveland cylinders were much worse and 90% came out with the block being media tumbled and the rest came out with the .030 overbore :)

289 Heads are fine, just need to drill the bolt holes larger, I love mine on my 351 Windsor!

yep.. just as long as you hog out those pitifully low flowing exhaust ports or the headers you attach to them are mostly wasted on any larger motor. Or even a smaller one for that matter. lol
