disable steering lock

so i want to bypass the ignition key completely. i would assume that the lock is in the mechanism itself and ive read on how to remove it but if there is another way that would be less invasive im all for it as old + plastic dont usually go together well.

im planing on installing switches on a panel under the dash and i have a kill switch hidden in the car and with the 3 speed floor shifter and the fact that its garage kept most people wont get very far anyways

 

turn the key cylinder to the unlocked position. the key cylinder can be removed when in the run position. you have to take the wheel off to release the cylinder.

 

its as easy as that? theres no pins or tabs than need to be moved?

 

Take a Dremel to the locking pin that engages the steering wheel. Personally, I would leave the key where its at.

 

Well my key sticks and ivr already fried some starters

 

Wouldn't it easier to fix the problem than replacing starters?

 

i think i need to swap the ignition barrel but i dont wanna have to swap all the locks on the car to get matching keys. plus it will just make everything easier.

 

i doubt its the key cylinder. its more likely the rack that the key cylinder turns, the push rod or the ignition switch. what ever it is, chances are it can just be cleaned up and greased.

 

A locksmith can re-key the new ignition tumbler or you can rekey it yourself. I think there's a write-up in the tech section on how-to. I'm with Bryant on the cleaning and greasing.
