Came up in a thread again... I meant to ask this here earlier...

Old Mustangs and our cars suffer from this malady... seems to come from under the right side of the car or behind the dash.

Mine is intermittent - some days it happens at EVERY SINGLE STOP, sometimes only going over speed bumps, then nothing at all for weeks at a time so I forget about it.

So WHAT IS... the Ford Dash Squeak?

What's a muffler bearing and does it need grease? heh... uh...

I always thought of exhaust as the culprit but we changed a few systems out and the squeaking seems to come from some place forward of that (unless the acoustics of our cars are SO BAD that's what it is...). More up in the firewall.

Methinks frame-flexing over speed bumps... maybe the dashboard itself... and they didn't use styrofoam back in those days because that's what it sounds like. Squeaky styrofoam.

Bingo! Mavericks are notorious for this.

If you are talking suspension squeak then as FORD TECH for 20 years all those hacked up shock towers to grease the control arms are in vain. It is the non greaseable spring perch/saddle on top of the control arm that the coil spring rides on that is of corse if you are talking suspension squeak.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you. I have had to install grease fittings in way to many Mavericks to get rid of the typical front end squeak on these cars and I have owned about 40 different ones, nine presently. I have never had to replace the upper perch to do it. Not saying it won't cause a squeak but it's way more common for the upper bushings (no grease fittings) to dry out and cause it. They even make a kit with a tool and 90% fittings to keep from cutting holes in the shock towers for this problem.

im with ray on this, mustangs and cougars do it also. i have also found that just pushing grease into the bolt holes does fix it temporarily if you dont want to put in the grease fittings.

So you have 40 year old spring perches because they don't go bad and make noise?

No, I simply stated that I've never had to replace the perch to get rid of the squeak caused by the dried out control arm bushings. I do usually replace the perches when I do a rebuild though.

actually, the ones on my wifes 68 cougar are still on there and still stock. The current owner is a licensed mechanic and is restoring it for show. if they are kept lubed and the car is driven fairly normal they last pretty well. the grabber on the other hand, i had to replace them despite proper maintenance. probably something to do with how i drive it.....hehe
