drove up to eddyville dragstrip today... it was okay, i went through tech alright. i made 5 runs total. 4 time trials, 1 round of eliminations. my first run was 2nd best. it was 9.580@71mph. i was rather disappointed:confused:. i was hoping for 8.5 or faster. oh well.. my high perf. teacher didnt think i would run 10.05. i ran a buch of 9.60's. then my best time was against the andy grifiths cop car. i ran 9.543@72. my reaction times were generaly around .200. my best was .0987. 60' times were all around 2.06. but with a open 2.79 rearend i was pretty happy with how it launched. thinkin about gettin a mini spool. and some 3.55's. i dunno though. i guess mayby i should put my good heads on first. well thought id let you all know how it ran.

Very nice for an open rear. I would go with the gears and spool before the head change, just to see what improvement that makes. I see some 8's in the crystal ball, for the future. Keep up the good driving and let us know of the results.

Nice job. Good '60s for open rear and high gears. 9.50s should equate to a around a mid 14 quarter mile. Respectable for sure. Take one step at a time and don't do all of your mods without evaluating each one separately if possible. You may actually be working backwards without even knowing it. Small steps = big gains. Good luck and keep us posted. (y)

Not bad for those gears and an open rear.
Like said above... swap the rearend first. Lots easier to do for me, and helps out a ton.
I went from a 2.75's to a 3.70's in one of my old trucks... Woke that baby up for sure.

the wierd thing is that my 2.79s dont act like it. going down the highway at 70mph my tach reads 2900.... and its not like i have the smallest tires ever.. they are 245/60R14. and i would do the rear end first, but my heads are already done and paid for.. 72 cast iron heads w/ 1.96 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves. ported intake and exhaust runners. polished cumbustion chamers. screw in studs, guide plades.... yeah theyre pretty nice. im hoping they will put me down to 8.8 secs. to bad i wont be able to find out till next season. only 1 week left at eddyville.

Did a little math on your 2900rpm at 70. If your speedo is accurate then you seem to have a 3.15 to 3.20 rearend ratio depending on your actual tire diameter. A 245/60/14 is usually around 25.5 inches, some tires vary a little. Maybe someone has been in there already? I also translated your best run to 1/4 mile time and it came to around a 15.00. Your HP also tranlated to about 175 based on the same info. Thought that might help. Keep up the good work.(y)

P.S. you will need a little over 50 more Horsepower (about 220) to get your 8.80s. Mathematically speaking anyways.

I get that he has a 2.79 rear end.

    with a 25.5 tire at 3000 RMP = 74MPH

I have 2 sets of ported heads... putting bigger valves in them also
One has roller tip rockers, posi locks, screw in studs, guideplates etc
    Good heads...
I thought you already had a set of gears to work with
I'd do the heads and see how the "seat of the pants" feels.
Then do a few runs next season and then the gears

i know ive got more than 175 or 220 at the engine. those numbers sound about right at the tires though.. i have a chassis dyno at school that i want to use, but the teacher dosnt think my motor is broke in good enough yet. at the engine ive got some where between 300-350hp. ill tell you what i have from top to bottom right now. velocity stack, holley 4160 (600 cfm), 1 inch spacer, 83 mustang aluminum intake, mildly ported 73 heads with small valves and stock rockers and pushrods, paw cam 270 intake duration - 280 exhaust .448 intake lift .472 exhaust, paw hydraulic lifters, silvolite hyper eutectic flat top pistons, stock rods and crank(turned .010/.010), 73 block bored .030 and decked .010. about 9:1 or 9.5:1 compression, summit long tube headers(1.5" primarys w/ 3" collector), flowtech 3" exhuast cutouts.

    think that covers it.

According to Dyno2003, you're sitting at just under 300 hp.

nickriede you should be VERY proud of yourself and your car!!!!!

If I read your screen name right I see you are 17 years old and are racing your car on the track:clap: Well I for one am very proud of you(y) I hope you get your car the way you want it and keep the speed on the track where you will be as safe as possible.

Nice numbers for a car that's 30+ years old, I saw a 2003 Mach One yesterday running 9.49 in the 1/8 mile. See how close you are:eek:
