I want to install a 8.8 from a latemodel mustang, probly a 94and newer car. The question I have is the driveshaft. I know my maverick has u bolts that hold it on and the latemodel stuff Im used to has four bolts that hold it on. My question is, does anybody know if the latemodel driveshaft can be used also or does it require a custom length driveshaft etc. I wanna put latemodel 17'' bullet wheels on this car from a 2001 later GT. I dont like wheels spacers and I cant stand the fact that this thing has a one wheel peel rear end anyway. Id like to do a lot of cool things to this car but no one around here owns a maverick let alone has modded one. I have some spring perches already and grinding off the 8.8 junk is easy. I have a 7.5 traction lock rear from an SVO stang that would work just not as tough but I dont plan on hotrodding this car at all. Just want it to look and drive nice. thanks
I think that you are going to have to combine the two driveshafts. I don't know if any of the late model stuff came with aluminum shafts or not, now may be a good time to go to that. That would probably depend on whether or not your current yoke could be duplicated or welded to an aluminum shaft. Length? I don't know. That is probably where you need a machine shop or driveshaft specialist. Good luck, Seth
Not sure the 17's will clear in the wheel wells. For ease and economical installation, I would use a 9in. Early Stangs are the right width but very rare, also a 57 car will fit but they are scarce too. A simple method is to shorten the housing on a wider one with small bearings, use the 8in Mav axles and they will hold up fine in your application. Driveshaft will still have to be shortned to fit but is made for ford applications of u-joints, easier than the 8.8. Have been using this set-up for years in my race car with 400HP and have not had any axle probs.(knock on wood). But it's your call either way. By the way I happen to have a set of 17's off a 2000 Stang, factory aluminum with center caps, belong to a friend of mine who can't use them either.
