    Hello,

I have my 71 mav grabber in the shop right now. I am set on having dual exhaust installed, however the mechanic showed me under the car and said that the tail pipe would be too close to the gas tank on the drivers side so I would have to get a new smaller gas tank est 600$ or he said something about cutting into the trunk space.
I know many of you have modified your cars including dual exhaust how do you do it, have you run into this problem, any suggestions option I may not know about?

    Any ideas appreciated.

On both my 72 Mavericks the exhaust exits to the outside the shackles( between shackles and trunk drop down area) 1 car has 2 1/2 inch and the other has 2 inch exhaust. Both cars point down slightly instead of straight back. No problems just gives the pipe benders a fit.

Okay so the gas tank can stay and I can have the dual exhaust.Which is better the 2 inch or 2 1\2" exhaust? Great option,
    thank you.

Also do you know if the rear springs have to be custom made to fit in order to accomodate a v8 upgrade?

I like the sound of the 2 1/2 inch better but the car has more motor than the car with 2 inch, easier to fit 2 inch also. If the motor in your car is going to develope some horsepower then I would go with 2 1/2.

Rear springs are fine for v8 upgrade if the dont sag now, always nice to upgrade to 4 leaf set up though. I would be more worried about front springs but they will probably be okay you wont really know until you get the motor in it but it has worked out just fine in most cases.

Just about everyone that owns a V8 Maverick has had dual exhaust installed ... I have not heard of anyone having a problem with the drivers side pipe being near the tank. It has not been a problem for me ... it isn't like your exhaust pipes are going to be glowing red hot or something.

I put a three inch pipe about 15 inches long over the duel on the left side kinda like the old motorcycle heat shields for upswept exhaust, I drilled some 3/8 holes along the outboard side of the shield, shield ended at back of gastank and with the chrome exstension tips on it isn't noticible, I was a little concerned myself about how close it was, have run this setup for @ 5 years, you can put your hand on the shield without burning it, its warm but a lot cooler than the exhaust pipe itself

    same issue

i had the same problem, the guys at the shop put the exhaust out the side because quote "it wont work with that there tank:hmmm:" so they decided to make it exit the illegaly... its easier to get turn downs in my opinion.:yup:

oh and a late welcome i like your car:Welcome:

the 2-1/2" sound noticeably better than 2 or 2-1/4 pipes. Deeper that is. Its close but not a problem. here is a pic of my 2-1/2. Some guys opt to have the pipe come out thru the spring, that looks good and is another option. Perhaps someone will post a picture of that for you too. DSCF7029a_original.jpg

You can get the exhaust beside the tank....no problem.

On the later years....the 19 gallon tank is wider and will not work as well.
