I have a 71 Maverick 2-door 302. Has anyone completed a dual exhaust conversion which ended with the exit pipes on each side on the gas tank? If so, did you use the same gas tank or was a new one purchased? If a new one, from which vehicle? If the original one, was it moved from or retained in its original location? Also, if a new one was purchased and it did not have an upper breather cap, how was the upper breather cap and system addressed? Were there any other modification considerations...ex. moving of straps, fuel line relocation, filler tube, etc. Thanks for your help guys.
I did one with the stock tank and 2.5 tailpipes. It works but you have to be real good with the bender and have lots of patience and be prepared to try a couple times till they look right
A decent mechanic can bend and install 2-1/2" pipes without any other mods. It will need to hug the spring tight on the drivers side, space is critical there. A little trial and error, in and out, till its good, then mirroring on the passenger side. As long as the shop understands that it shouldnt be a problem.
Mine had 2.25 back in the 80's coming out on each side of the tank. Watch the spring as noted, and the pickup/sending unit on the passenger side. I did the Mustang tank swap as mentioned by Mavaholic's article. It moves the pickup/sending unit to the front away from exhaust pipes. Seth
