Anyone know of a good electric fan that fits these cars with minimal modifications? I've been reading around online about how much better it is to run an electric fan and how much power and stuff you can gain. I took my fan off and ran the car down my neighborhood and back once today and I must say I was impressed. I bet it'll get even better gas mileage to. Or if anyone knows of a electric fan off another car that will fit, that would be even better. Got a 2,500+ car junkyard 15 minutes from my house and everyone knows they have cheap prices.
the fan isnt so critical as the temp of the thermal switch on it or having it set to switch on with the key. as long as the fan/fans cover as much surface area as the stock fan they will cool it better, and if they cover more it would be even better.make sure you have enough space between the front of the pulley and the radiator also. id just measure all of that and keep the measurements with you while walking the yard. if they are always on though, you may need a bigger alt to cover the constant draw. summit has the thermal switch for around 35 bucks so id go that way.
If you don't want adjustability, Jegs has a thermostatic switch for 17 bux. It is set for 170*... I have used one and it worked fine. You might do a seach, but I think that a Ford Taurus fan has been the prefered model in past postings on the subject. All there is to hook up is thermostatic switch to relay, battery to relay, relay to fan, ignition to switch. I hid my stuff so you couldn't even see any wiring.
I was just going to put it on a toggle switch with a relay. A thermostatic switch sounds real cool though. Then it will turn on and off by itself like a newer car. Guess I will probably go that route and put it on a relay with a switched 12 volt source. I have a few 30 amp relays laying around. Would one of those be enough to run the fan? Guess tomarrow I'll go junkyard huntin'.
Jamie; while you are at the yard.......if you find the little brackets on the cowl that hold the hood to firewall seal down, pls get me a pair. Mine are gone. Sorry to hijack, but just thought of it. Thanks, Earl
Jamie, try to find a fan from a late model taurus with the 3.8l. Its a popular swap for the fox body crowd, might fit your radiator and has a built in shroud . Pushes something like 2800 cfm. I tried a 16" hayden and it just fit (6 cyl radiator). Worth a shot.
Earl ... your car should have the short seal on the cowl ... they didn't use those brackets until 1973 when the made the seal go all the way across ...
I had two of them I thew away cause they didn't fit w/v8. The motor sticks out too far for comfort. Try to find something with a pancake motor. The imports usually make the setups fit closer to the radiators and that might be something to look into. By the way, brackets? Got any? Got a message today that my tray is coming soon. Thanks

I think mine came off a taurus (I would have to check my website or search the forum to verify that). It is a little small, and only covers 2/3 of the radiator, but has a nice tight shroud. Running on a relay, so it runs all the time once the engine is turned over. I might try that thermostatic doohicky for $17... Jamie, I was also shocked when I first took the fan off and ran the car. It felt like a 20 HP boost. Mostly just quicker takeoffs.
ive had two of the probe type sensors to turn the fan on & both were less than impressive. if you have an open pipe plug port in the intake or can put one into the top hose or housing, the MOROSO one works great. but it is a threaded fitting.
I ran my fan off a 30 amp switch in the dash. It lit up when there was power supplied. Not the best or brightest, but it worked well and I could be sure when the fan was on or off. I just kicked it on when the car stopped. As long as I was moving then I left it off. I had a coolant temp gauge in the car too. I think the switch was a $5 radio shack rocker type. I started out with an el-cheapo switch in there and it melted and burned up the wiring!! I would use that $17 thermo switch. That sounds like the right way to go.
The most difficult part of the fan selection is getting one thin enough to fit ("pancake style", as Blu puts it!) Even so, I mounted mine off to the side so that it would clear the belt pulley. I have about an inch or so clearance, just enough to clear engine movement without rubbing.
Yea, it makes a huge diffrece with a 6 cylinder. 6 cylinder is totally diffrent then a V8. Temp sensor screws into the back of the head. This car will never have a V8 as long as I'm driving it daily. I Don't have time to go to the junkyard today and I'll be out of state again tomarrow and Sunday.. Guess it'll have to wait till Monday.
What about a flex fan? And with a pusher (pic in my gallery) I was going to try to find a clutch but I found the small electic fan in some boxes I bought at an auction so... Has anyone tried the clutch idea?
