I turn off the engine and have the keys in my hands but the engine keeps running! I have to pull the distributor wire off to shut the engine off! This is on my 73 Maverick 302v8. Any ideas? Would me spraying WD40 in the key socket to loosen it up have caused some sort of short?
I dont think the WD40 would effect it. I had this happen on a truck I was working on once. I forgot how i fixed it, but part of the problem was 2 wires behind the keyswitch in the dash touched once you started it and would just "jump" across there. Prob not the case in your car. Might also be your ignition switch isn't turned all the way to off? I've had this happen before also, loose key in ignition will pull out in any position
check the "rod" on top of the steering column that is hooked to the key switch...it might need adj....frank...
Sounds to me like the solenoid switch on the fender apron (pass. side) is bad. Had that happen to me when I got my car. Replace the switch, and that should take care of it. Good luck!
I also had that problem with my 77' Maverick. My car was still running and I had the keys in my hand. In my case it was the ignition switch. It only happened once and I never did replace the switch.
