The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Electronic ignition. Bigger carb. Better exhaust. And better rear gears.

Change to a '69-'71 timing gear and chain. Up the compression ratio.

    1. If it doesn't have it already, get an electronic ignition.

    2. Decide if you want to convert to a 2bbl carb or stick with a 1bbl carb. If you go the 1bbl way, consider the Vaporizer carb from Pony Carburetors.

    3. Better exhaust combined with some really good headers.

    3. Consider putting in a cam for a mild build.

    Good luck.

Ford retarted the cam timing fot better emissions numbers (less power.) The early pre-emissions has more aggressive valve timing. The cam gear key way is cut about 1/16" more clockwize than the later emission gears.

It that true for the 302s also? Would early sprockets on an '88 roller cam fit and give an advantage?

Back in the day, when I was still driving my 72 Gran Torino Sport with the Q code 351 Cleveland, I was told by Crane Cams that, in the case of the Cleveland, the stock Ford cam was the culprit used in changing the timing in order to show "better" numbers for the EPA. Crane told me to just put in any aftermarket cam and that would change it back. Maybe I was hoodwinked but that was what I was told.

The Pny carb costs $400 and it is an easy install with your basic hand tools. It even comes with a installation DVD. It's a direct bolt on and even comes fully tuned for you.
