Well i finally got the mav insured and registered. its a good feeling to be driving it agian. i currently have 2 pipes that go off the headers into flowmasters and dump under the back seat, All kinds of fumes inside, i went to the exaust shop to get a quote to have dual exaust out the back and a X pipe installed, he said those are better than H pipes because exaust dont mak 90degree bends. He also said he cant get duals out the back and suggested out the sides right behind the door. since i have kids that will be getting in and out regularly it causes concern and i would prefer them out the back. I know some of you guys have done it. can i get pics, pipe size, etc that i may need and i can take the pics around and get some more quotes. thanks guys!

i dont see why an x-pipe that exits out the back is impossible? in front of the rear tires doesnt sound too bad either, i mean as long as the car is off when peoples legs are near by as there getting in and out. i remember one time a friend was getting in my cutlass and i started the car and took a few hairs off his leg lol

 I don't see why it's a problem. I have dual exhaust, headers, and flowmasters. My pipes come out all the way in the back. I think I've got a 2 1/4" pipe. Is there much difference in our set ups?

Running them in front of the rear wheel would be illegal in most states. Usually they have to be behind the last opening window. No way to do that on these cars.

Mavaholic is spot on....you need to check your state law.
The last I checked here in KY it had to dump past the (back) of the front seat, but thats been years ago.

I don't know about the whole "most states" thing!
I have family in MD and they are oblivious to how liberal that state has become! Liberal as in Nazified governmental regs.
They don't even realize you can still own a gun in most of the country! Or at least own a gun and carry it outside of your house...

Anyway, most states I have lived in don't give a dam where your exhaust exits as long as you have a muffler.

do you have a 74-77 car? maybe your exhaust guy thinks he will be unable to fit catylitic converters into the system? if you dont need to run a sniffer test at your DMV inspection or have a pre-'74 car theres no reason to include cats in your set up, unless you want to be enviromently friendly lol

3 in. pipe is tough to bend around the axle. If you have anything smaller than that, it can be done. I'd check with a different muffler/exhaust guy.
He may be concerned about the sending unit/pickup on the gas tank.

Mavman has his exiting at the rear qtr. behind the rear wheel.

Well I agree about the Maryland gun laws but in MD will not pass inspection unless the exhausts exist behind the rear most passenger compartment in the vehicle. The only vehicles that will pass that I know if with the pipe turned out the side are pickup trucks. But then again and on the other hand a 1970-1977 maverick doesnt have to pass inspection if you tag it historic in Maryland either so if you want them out the sides you can do it if you tag the car properly

I have 2 inch pipes all the way out the back. Not sure what size you will be using but this worked out fine. I would think a good exhaust/muffler shop could run over the axles and out the back.

What is this "inspection" you speak of?
Is that a Maryland slang term?

inspections are horrible. this year im going to try to grt historic tags on my olds and mav. as of now the exhaust on my olds dumps behind the FRONT tires, i'll probably have to change that lol.

Only smog inspections here on the left coast and then only '73 or 4 and newer right now (bi-annual). The only other time you have to get your car inspected is if you get a ticket for an equipment violation and then only that part.

Even the California liberals have not been able to get our cars yet, but they keep trying.

Actually, '75-'77 had catalytic converters. 74's did not.
