72 maverick 200 I6. leaking from manifold to exhaust pipe. got 2 new gaskets for it and both leaked. I tried both sizes. but it still leaks and recently got worse and its tightened all the way now. thinking of welding in a piece of exhaust pipe to the manifold then connecting exhaust pipe what is the manifold made of ? steel? unless you fine gents/ladies have any insight
Go to a muffler shop and have them make you a new front pipe , then put a new gasket on ,I wouldn't weld anything to the manifold ,the vibration will eventually crack your manifold or break bolts off ,the reason new cars have the little mesh pipe coming off the manifold is so it will flex when the motor revs up, I have seen guys take them off and then a month or so later the manifold cracks
rather do it myself. i guess ill order another gasket. seems when i took the first one off it was mangled a bit like i over tightened although i didnt or it was to big but it wasnt...
It is possible your pipe is not made to fit the exhaust manifold very well. An exhaust shop can fix this. Also...there is not a "gasket" between the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold. It is a thick, steal donut.
I have had I6's in the past that the exhaust pipe is a little tweaked and will not seal correctly when you change the doughnut. What I do to fix it is cut the pipe after the first bend on the pipe, install the new doughnut making sure the pipe is seated properly and then weld the pipe back together, sometimes you will need to add a little to the pipe. Any exhaust shop can do this for you.
Is the manifold cracked? I had the same problem on a 300 I6 in my 82 stepside 4X4. Welding cast Iron is not that dificult, Been there done that. To weld cast Iron I 1st cleaned it up, put it in my Gas grill at 400 for 3 hrs and then welded it and buried it under 2 feet of dirt in the yard for slow cooling. It really works, Done it for others on thier V8 boat motor cooling eqpt.
Coolvettes- i got both the smaller and larger donut seals last time and both had wiggle room when sitting on the flange. not sure how much there should be. Does anyone know what the outer diameter after the flange should be? Resto- my manifold isnt cracked.
well i got the right donut. the joint where they meet is warped/mangled. Anyone know where i can get a good/cheap exhaust? used/new stock or header pipe(s)?
he did not have one. Ive found one site who has em for $225 not bad. theres nos vintage hooker set on ebay right now but its $250 as of now and I need to save as much money as possibly. I'd be ok with a new/used down pipe? that comes out of the manifold. the manifold seems fine. Just not sure where id get the pipe that comes out of it.
