Ok, forgive me for being clueless, but I have no idea what to do about this exhaust leak. ANY help or pointers would be great on what to do, I don't even know where I would begin I'm just kind of figuring things out as I go. It's making my engine very hot, or atleast I think that's what's doing it.
You will need to replace the gasket (doughnut type) between the head pipe and manifold. You may need a torch to put some heat into those nuts so you can loosen them and remove em. You dont want to snap the studs off in the manifold. Before doing anything try and get a good look at the flange (the collar that bolts the pipe to the manifold) on that pipe to see if it isnt rotted through around the nuts. If it looks good and comes apart...A new doughnut gasket will fix it up. Exhaust leaks like this can cause the engine to run a bit hotter. The big concerne is that if left unrepaired for a long time it will cause the exhaust valve closest to the leak to burn up...Good luck!!!
Hey, we were all there at one time. This is how you learn. Just remember...The only dumb question is the one that isnt asked...
When I put it in gear and push on the gas, it always wants to die I have to like pump it twice just for it to start to go, it makes a suction sound also when it's about to want to die. It's not a big concern right now but it's kind of annoying. I'd still like to know why it's doing that.
The choke is not working properly or at all OR the accelerator pump on the carb isnt working...OR the timeing is off a bit (doubt this is the source) Or you have a fuel delivery problem...Does the car run well besides the off idle stumble???
when you go to pull the exhaust manifold, hit with some penitating oil. hit it good. let it sit awhile. then smack the bolt heads(not to hard) should come right off. good luck.
Yeah after that it runs great, it's just stopping at stop signs and it dying when I try to take off. Sometimes I have to put it in Neutral and rev it a tad then put it in drive and it goes but that can't be good for it. :/
That is something they have to quote you. I think I paid $35 for two studs and a gaskett a few years back. That stalling could also be lack of fuel.
x2 it's really a pita and they can do it ten times faster, but..... the satisfaction is ten times DIY.
Your curb idle may be set too low...Float may be set too low...Fuel pickup screen in tank could be plugging up with rust or may have rotted off allready...If you dont have a good torch set up...Listen to Gene and save yourself the colorful euphemisms and busted knuckles/studs...
