After much research and extremely high estimates, I decided to remove wasted power steering system and go to manual. The last step is the fanbelt setup I need help with. Should I get a idler pulley to replace the power steering pump pulley (this will require a difference bracket I haven't been able to find) or should I replace the fan pulley with a shallower one that will line up the alternator, water pump and crank/vibration dampner. I haven't seen a 302 with manual steering to visualize this and my five volume shop manual has no clue. I have gone to the wrecking yard but no engines are complete enough to see. Help! ONly one person responded so far.
Solved my own Pulley Problem! Going backwards to manual steering requires a change in pulleys to connect the fan belt. Late 60s and early 70 mustangs have a smaller, shallower water pump pulley that works fine to connect the alternater with the water pump and crank. Simple and clean with one belt! Car steers much better until I have to parallel park!
