Hi, I have 1972 Grabber with a C-4. Some were along the way somebody converted the column shifter to a floor shifter. I put the plastic bushing kit from NPD for a 1965 Mustang in today. I do not know what year the shifter is. The neutral safety and back up light switch is in side the shifter box. The gear selector would move about 2” of free play when in gear. Before I put the kit in, the shifter would not go into first gear detent. In drive, it would start out in first and shift into second and third. Once the bushings were in, I put the selector in park Put the Trans in park and adjust the shifter rod until it fit perfect. I drove Maverick home from the base auto shop, took first all the way to 6000, and then hit second. It felt great. When I got home, I cannot put the Trans in park. The gear selector seems to be in the park detent but it is in reverse. Is there an alignment hole on the gear selector box, like what on a 4-speed box?

    Thanks
    Tony

No alignment hole...just trial and error.

    two things...
does it have a stock shifter lever linkage?
does it have the trans. lever flipped for the floor shifter?

    ......

The preferred method to adjust the linkage on a C4 is:
    1. Jack the vehicle up and properly block it so you can access the transmission and its linkage.
    2. Place the in-car shifter in "Drive" load it toward the 2nd gear detent with an elastic cord.
    3. get under the car and remove the rod from the transmission linkage.
    4. Place the transmission lever in the "Drive" position (third detent from park).
    5. adjust the linkage rod to engage the transmission lever without moving it in either direction.
    6. Tighten the locknut.
    7. Test the operation of the transmission while shifting it manually.
    8. Adjust as required to get all detent positions.

I have never had to adjust the linkage beyond the adjustment the first time with stock linkage. If you have other than stock linkage you should start by making sure that the distance from the pivot to the linkage hole is the same as the transmission lever - or that it will travel at least as far as the transmission's lever.

Thanks everbody for the info. I don;t know if the trans lever has been flipped when the mod was done. The trans shifter arm hole for the rod is at the top.

If you are saying the the lever on the transmission is up , with the hole at the top then you have the linkage in the correct position. All you need to do is adjust it.
