ok we all know how a supercharger works... and we all know how a A/C compressor clutch works... why has noone combined the two to have a supercharger you can turn on and off?

    Just pickin your brain....

My Eaton S/C is only in boost under engine load due to the bypass valve. I commute with it everyday on the highway and never go into boost ...

why would you want to turn a supercharger off?
You can limit the boost for highway then turn it all the way up for the track.

im not saying i would want to but i know people driving force-fed cars for any extended period of time sometimes want to give it a break...

i was thinking of something like a bypass also... inside the supercharger have a routing for the air so when the clutch releases it is like have an N/A car with just low compression... so you could take your supercharged street car on long road trips but get great gas mileage while doing it... HIGHWAY SPEEDS EAT UP GAS IN A FORCE-FED CAR

mot necessarily i'm not a expert or anything on boosted applications. But i do know a couple of people who get better mileage after they added a turbo/SC

it all depends on what your boost is set up for... for instance... you can take a buick 3.8 s/c and get like 35 miles to the gallon and on the other hand you can barely get 16 out of a ej20 subaru wrx... it all depends on if its power boost or just necessary boost

A Roots style is ON or OFF ....

OFF when there is engine vacuum ... ON when there is no vacuum - i.e. load or WOT. This is all thanks to the vacuum controlled relief valve.

My car idles at 20HG ... and hits 10PSI boost at around 5000 RPM.

The M90 on my car draws about 1/3 HP from the engine when no boost ... and up to 40HP from engine under full boost at 5200 RPM .. that is why turbo's are so much more efficient.

I could easily drive from GA to CA and never hit boost ... so the complications of adding an electric controlled clutch probably isn't worth it.
