...in the steering. While I was bleeding the brake lines I decided to do a little more exploring and inspection. Though it didn't move much by hand, when using my feet to wiggle the front wheels, the passenger side would move more than it should. The movement was in the idler arm and the neighboring ball joint.

In this pic, I have already removed the cotter pin, but found I could not make it up any more. The bushing is gone.

Is this a common parts house item, or am I going to have to search a specialty catalog? I have briefly looked on line at JC Whitney and Auto Krafters without initial success.

(Not bad pics for a cell phone).

i did an complete frt end rebuild on my 74 and i purchased all my bushings from a company called polygraphite performance, the kit i got was only like 225 bucks and it came with everything including all 4 control arms and ball joints but it didnt come with an idler arm, and if i remember correctly, i went and got one from advance auto parts for 25 bucks. and they had it in stock

I have a used idler arm in good shape you can have, if you pay shipping and a couple bucks for me to box it and drive it to UPS. It has a grease zerk on the bottom, and looks almost new. I didn't throw it away when I swapped my power-to-manual, and didn't know it would fit both. So I kept it for just an occasion such as this.

Or, for about twice the price, you can get one new from Autozone...part number FA646. I paid $49.99, which appears to be more expensive than the ones the other guys are talking about.

If the metal parts aren't bad you can buy just the bushing.
