i bought another mav a few weeks ago and it sat out in the santa cruz mountains and got really wet, a whole lot of surface rust for a cali car with rusted out floorpans and some rot in a quarter panel, well along with the floor pans the fuse box got some moisture to it anyways, got it home, threw a battery in it and hit the lights, nothing, hit the windshield wipers, they moved about 1/4 and stopped, hit the brakes and those lights came on, so i knew i was getting power, decided to say **** it and started fixing the floor pans got all that done and ran tests and i get power all the way back to the firewall so i figured it must be a problem inside, all the fuses look intact so i started poking around, all the contacts are rusted and its pretty messy, i have another fuse block from a 70 or 71, not sure, can i just replace the whole thing? ive read the tech articles on upgrading the fuseblock but to be honest im just not that good with electrical at all, any idea's on how i should deal with this problem? its basically the only thing keeping me from driving the car, the engine runs great, just rebuilt the carb and put a brand new tranny in with a shift kit, just this damn wiring
I would (after disconnecting the battery) take a flat wire brush or small flat file and clean the metal contacts on the block with electircal contact cleaner. Thats only if your not ready to replace it.
well i've already pulled the block from the firewall and inspected it, and some of the wires connecting into the block on the back are rotted also, so im thinking it needs to be replaced
Sounds right. For other areas where you might have some minor corrosion, you might try this. http://www.altex.com/MG-Chemicals-Carbon-Conductive-Grease-846-80G-P144963.aspx I find it helpful on old contacts.
