Hi guys, so after pulling my fuel filters I realized that my gas tank is pretty rusty on the inside. and as you guys know they no longer make tanks for the 71 models, of corse. So I was wondering if you guys knew of any kits that clean out and seal gas tanks? I have seen many online but I am just not sure what really works or not.

    Thanks, Jakob

I agree - since you can with your '71, go with the new '76 tank.

Us 1970 tank guys are stuck fixing the old tanks. For that I recommend taking the tank to a radiator shop and having them boil it out and repair any pinholes. After that, any of the good catalyzed tank sealers will coat the tank just fine. I use the Eastwood product but have also been around the POR15 kit.

The first two options are good. Radiator shops typically have to cut a big hole in the tank so they can get all the water out. Then they weld it up again, I wasn't a big fan of that idea.

If the rust isn't too bad look into products like evapo-rust or other surface rust treatments. Some are "green" enough to dump out in the driveway, and I hear they work surprisingly well.

You have options depending on how bad it is.

if you do the coating and miss one spot that's where your next hole will be...
...I coat my new tanks before they are gassed up the first time...
