I Have Just Pulled The Gas Tank Out Of My Donor 1970 Mav To Put In My 1970. It Is The Drop Down Type That Bolts In From The Trunk. Is There A Gasket That I Need To Put Between The Tank And The Trunk Floor? Is There Any Silicone Or Sealant That Needs To Be Put On? Finally, Is There Any Other Prep Work That I Need To Do Before Putting The Tank In? Any Comments Or Suggestions Would Be Helpful. I Only Want To Do This Once.
Thanks Alot For All Of Your Past Advice,

    Stuart

Did you clean it out? If you are attempting to do so, use MEK (found at Lowes) and a chain. If you have a bad sending unit or vent, use it to plug the openings and put the chain inside the tank. Pour some MEK into the tank and shake it all arround for a while. Afterwards, if you like, you can reline the inside with "Red Coat", found mine at O-Reily.

The only seal that needs to be installed is the O ring that seals the filler neck into the tank. I dont think they are available new anywhere so I hope yours is good. The seal thats goes around the filler neck and screws to the floor is reproduced and available from Daniel Carpenter.

A '70 has a drop-in tank. The filler neck and tank are joined by a section of rubber hose with 2 clamps, like Mustangs.

Yes you need to seal the flange where the tank bolts to the trunk floor. If you do not seal it you will get exhaust in the car. They used the old style grey putty to seal them from the factory. I use windshield sealant (Buthel) when I put mine back in. You can get a roll at any parts store. When you install the tank make shure all the dirt and rust is taken care of and painted before you drop the tank in. Run the sealant around the opening like you would a windshield, drop the tank in and bolt it down. This will squeeze the sealant out and seal the mounting flange. After it is bolted down just run a knife around the tank and remove all of the extra sealant the squezes out on the top and bottom of the tank flange. If you want to seal the inside of the tank there are several products out there that do a wonderful job at doing that. Just ask at the parts store and they will be able to help you with that.
