ok.... so I think I narrowed it down to the fuel sending unit. The car likes to stall out ocassionally. its like the car is out of gas, but its not. which I think means there is something in the gas tank which isnt cool. SO, before I drop the tank since the gas gauge doesnt work I want to grab a fuel sendng unit to replace it. But no where has it. I did a search up here and saw Autokrafters, but which one do I need? do I need the one from the T-Bird or truck? thanks guys...
There is a cloth sock on the end of your sending unit that can act like a flap and restrict gas flow. On mine it was pluged so I took it off & ran two filters in line. If your gauge is reading right it could be the sock inside the tank on that unit that is causing you a problem. I would check that first sending units get alittle high $$ GOOD LUCK!
I see what he's saying. On the auto krafters website 2 units come up for a 1974 mav. Model B8S-9275A and B8C-9275B. But in their catalog it's part number D1DZ-9275A that you need for your car. And it looks like it's $70
sorry, its not the 74, its the 76. are they the same unit? Also it died again on my way to work, when it dies it kinda sputters, it doesnt back fire through the carb. it just kinda slows down the RPMS it sounds and feels like and then sputters till dead then wont start for a few moments, then it might or might not. What I have done in the past to fix it is suck gas through the line under the hood and since it take a lot of sucking it would seem as though there is a blockage. after that to make sure I have gas in the line I throw some starter fluid in there and fire her up. But it has done it 3 times in the last 24 hours. God knows its cold but it shouldnt affect it that much. I should drain and drop the tank now but I dont want to chance the unit being completely crapped out and not having a car for how ever long it takes to get it.....
Temporary fix and aid for troubleshooting,, With LOW air pressure, take gas cap off and reverse blow into the gas line tank side of the fuel pump. Remember use LOW air pressure and don't have your buddy smoking at rear of car! (only ex's are allowed) May want to Pb blaster the holding straps for the tank a couple days, here in the rust belt, pretty much a sure thing on replacing them, not sure how rusty yours are. After you blow threw line, you may want to siphon tank empty, filter gas, fill back up, re-siphon several times an see if you can get much "junk" out. May keep you running better till you get your parts in an replaced. Good luck! PS, blow threw line will usually knock that sock off the in tank line, my opinion, that's a good thing other than it's still in the tank
dkstuck: thats a good idea to get him going. Like I said before does the fuel gauge work? If it works you don't need a sending unit all it does is tell you how full the tank is or isn't. Sound like you have a on & off plugging of your line that is getting worse as long as your fuel pump is good. Good Luck!
yeppers, the fuel pump is still good, I already figured on replacing the belts, but thanks for the tip. blow through the gas line huh.... that kinda makes sence.... :16suspect
