I have a strange feeling that there is a no brainer answer to this question but here goes. A problem developed awhile ago whenever filling my maverick with gas. Right after the gas pump would click indicating a full tank, gas would come spraying out of the rear of the car. I am lucky enough to have the beautiful big bumbers (right) and then i have a nice mess of gas pooled behind the bumper and on myself. Now i watch, and when i am almost three quarters full i pump the gas very slowly. Even going very slow, that gas still sprays out of the back. Is there some sort of pressure release line or valve that is not functionin or possible obstructed?. I have never had this problem in any other car that you fill from the rear. Thanks guys.
Its these new fangled gas pumps. In the olden days it was never a problem to fill these cars up. Now I have to put it in slowly and keep moving it around until I get the right angle. It's an exercise in frustration. Thank an environmentalist.
hum thats funny ever since i bought my 75 i had the same problem. i mean my 73s i have always had to hold it no biggy.. but since i thought the 75 had the unleaded gas tube it would hold. NOT! the freakin thing clicks all the time and spews all the time. oh wells .. funny all it does it get gas all over the place! lol!
I hate that so much that I changed the filler neck on the new car. It's on the side and uses 89 probe neck and door, I can hardly wait to fill it the first time.
Thanks to everyone for the followups. I am still baffled though, i never had this problem a few years back, and there is one gas station that im pretty sure is still using the same pumps as they were back then. I guess if this is just the nature of the beast i will not fill all of the way up. Thanks again.
I have the same problem with both of our Mavericks and Mavoholic's right about the gas nozzels. I swear they were made to blow gas all over the place which sucks for me because I'm extremley allergic to gasoline. I get gas on my skin and I get a second degree chemical burn from it. I have to lay a bunch of towels on the rear filler panel and wrap a towel around the nozzel if I pump gas.
I always have several paper towels wrapped around the gas pump nozzle and slowly dispense gas to make sure I get none on the back panel. Filling Mavericks can be a messy experience if you are not careful. The Grabber I bought back in 95 from Indiana had crappy blackout paint on the rear panel. If you let Gas get in contact with it the paint would get soft and rub off ..
I read somewhere that its the formula they use for the gas now. My 84 F150 sometimes will click off like its full after you pump just a gallon or two if you pump it to fast. I usually have to just barely squeeze the pump to let it kinda trickle slowly in, sometime it takes a long time just to pump 10 or 12 gallons. Thanks for the heads up, when I get the Comet going I'll remember to pump it slow too.
I also believe that the chemical properties of gas have changed over the years...and lately, it isn't worth pee. Last time I filled the Mustang it pinged, rattled, and carried on like a diesel until I had to take 4 degrees out of the timing. On top of that, it only is getting about 28 mpg now, instead of 35. I don't think environmentalists have anything to do with it. I think it's oil companies. They want you to buy more fuel at a higher rate which translastes into more profit in their pocket. It's basically like heck with the customer (and environment)..lets get rich. Now...If I could find a way for methanol to get 20 mpg, I'd run it in a heartbeat. I don't see that happening anytime soon though!
I think you guys are right about there being a change in gasoline formulas. Our pickup runs like crap after we fill the tank. It gets a bad case of pre-ignition if we use anything other than high test gas, which cost us a mint at every fill-up. It never was great on gas, but it now seems to be worse than ever. If we use anything other than Texaco gas, it won't run worth a darn. A tune up and adjusting the timing didn't do much to correct the problem either. It seems like such a royal rip-off to have to pay a small fortune for gas that makes your vehicle run horrible. It almost makes me afraid to fill the tanks on the Mavericks for fear of how they will run afterwards. Maybe we should do what a friend of ours is doing. He is converting his 1985 Volvo to run on vegtable oil. We tease him about it, saying when he drives down the road his car will smell like a Burger King on a hot day.
I have been packing windshield towels around my filler neck when I fill up for a few years. Seems I have to do it with all my old cars. i agree, this new gas sucks. I remember when I used to like the smell of gasoline. Now I hate it. Dan
