Hey all, on my new Mav I wanna stick with the stock size of 14x7 rims on the front but would like to go with maybe a 15x12 or even a 16x12. Am I gonna run into quarter panel rub or what? :bananaman

Actually stock size is 14x6, And if it rubs or not depends on what size tire you have.

Even without tires, those will rub.

There sure are a lot of questions regarding maximum tire size without rubbing. I am sure someone out there has put all kinds of tires on and found out what the max size is. Why don't they post it so the rest of us can quit guessing?

Maybe Mavaholic, or someone who has been around awhile?

This just doesn't seem like a "guessing" type of issue. There should be one size that is as big as possible that will fit without rubbing.

Thats just it, there doesnt seem to be a certain max wheel/tire size. Some get away with more than others. 9 out of 10 end up trimming or rolling the lip though. I do think that we should have an official "post your rear wheel/tire combo with pics" thread. Half the old thread threads I look up are missing the pics.

Tire size is important, BUT, rim size and offset is where you will gain big or lose big with even very small changes.
275/60/15s will fit with the absolute right width and offset. That is a heckva big tire!

If there was a website dedicated to two Mav/Com issues, Headers, wheels, this site would have 25% less questions. Seems to be the most asked about stuff. But I must add, these cars are gonna be different at times. There is NO absolute answer on most of this. As I love to tell people, 'per application'.

As Dan would put it, On my comet, I have a 17x9 with a 4.5 or 4.47 inch backspacing or something like this on the rear. I have a 255/45 tire. My tire is so close to the leaf I can't get me finger between the two. But the tire is inside the fender so I can lower the car with just rolling the fender. The Kumho web page says the tire is 10.4 inches wide. Any wider and the tire will be evan with the fender & I wouldn't be able to lower the car. A 275/40 would most likely touch the fender. I got my Idea from MaverickMan. He has 255/45/18's on the back of his car. Thats what I should have got.

There is no "one size fits all". Saggy springs, different rears, non-square chassis can affect what will fit a particular car. There's tons of info available online from wheel and tire manufacturers about dimensions of their products. All you gotta do is crawl underneath and measure the distances between the drum surface, springs and wheelwell and do the math.

I ran 275/60/15 on 15x8 wheel with 4" back spacing. They worked on my 2 door but rubbed on my 4 door. These were on the rear. So yes there is no "Set" tire size that is the Max.

Just mini tub the rear, center the gas tank or put a fuel cell in the trunk, & move the leaf spring over with a kit...lol...sounds like alot to do to get a 12 inch rim under the car, but hey, that's standing out. To me all of us is doing that. I have not seen a Maverick or Comet at a car show around here yet.

My 2 cents...X-wife has 275/60/15 with the above 4" back spacing, Mine are 265/50/15 with 4.25 back spacing. Hers are 8" wide and mine are 8.5".
But we can not switch back and forth, My springs sag more and cause 275's to rub top of the fender well, hers had body damage repair, BONDO, and rubs the sides of the 265's.
Sometimes you just gotta play with it until it's right.

I just scored 2 Cragar S/S 15X8.5 and 2 15X7 rims, in moderate shape. These came with low profile tires, not my style. I found that 245 60 15 fit the back with just a little space to spare. My rear is jacked up by about 2 inches. I will probably drop it back down to lose the "air" around the tire. Too much bigger than this will rub on springs, brake lines, and who knows what else.

FYI I could break loose my stock 14X6s anywhere, anytime. Even with half throttle. With eth 245 60 15, I have a hard time breaking them loose unless I am standing in water. These things have GREAT traction. Of course, they are BFG T/A radials, which are a decent tire.

    I will try to add a pic.[IMG]
