So was mine, one side of the shifter was standard P-R-N-D-1-2 and then you flicked the other gat open and moved the shifter to the side and you had 1-2-3 so you could shift the Automatic manually from 1 to 2 and from 2 to drive

You should keep the column shifter... I know you didn't want to hear that.

Aren't you converting from a 6-cylinder to 8-cylinder ... unless you get all the 8-cylinder linkage parts out of a column shift Maverick your column shifter won't work.

Shouldn't be hard to get all the needed parts to keep column shifter.

Best always to see an feel the shifters. Look around at others and speed shops, nice to use it first

Wait a minute, are you saying that when you swap from a I6 to a V8, both with C4 automatic tranny, both on the column that you have to change a bunch of stuff?

    Never said alot ... :)

flexplate and shifter linkage ... and kickdown rod if you want to keep that.

    Bellhousing also if it's a 170/200 ...

and none of the 6-banger C4's are built as strong as a 302 C4 ...

Good chance the C4 coolant lines are bent differently as well on the different engines.

Learn something new everyday, I always thought that if it was a column shifter with a C4 tranny the linkage was the same wether it was a 6 or an 8.... I mean if it's a C4 Tranny and they are both on the column why would the linkage be differnet because of the engine that is hooked to it?
I did know the kickdown bar/linkage was/is different but not the regular shifting likage?? whoda thunk? :hmmm:

I also know that the V8 and I6 C4 Trannies are built different inside, stronger for the V8 of course, but I also had a 250 I6 that was hooked to a C4 out of a mustang II that was originally the turbo 4 cyl and it held up to the I6 engine.

The V8 linkage bolts to the engine ..the 6 linkage bolts to the bell housing .. must be different for some reason ... perhaps to clear the exhaust manifold and down pipe?

Very inexpensive, and the stoutest cable shifter I ever had was a B&M Z-Gate.

Had others, but they were lots more money and had cheaply made bells and whistles that didn't hold up for any length of time.
The Z-Gate has few parts to break, and what it does have is tough as nails.
The only thing I didn't like was the cheap black plastic T handle.
But the fancy aluminum and chrome ones they sell thread right on in it's place.
    Dave.
