    Added a stripe.

In getting ready for Goodguys this year, I sent the car to my body guy for a little cosmetic work on the hood. A couple year ago, I had a chunk of wood fall out of the bed of the trunk in front of me going down the hwy put a dent in the front lip of the hood. I needed that fixed as well as the cowl area where I cut out the vents and tried my best to weld in some patch panels. I've been running around with a mag strip on it for years now and finally its fixed. While it was there I decided to add a stripe to the hood. I've always liked the blackout strip Charlie Ping has on his so this was my inspiration. Im not sure I totally like it yet but if I never really warm up to it, I'll just have it redone as all blue.

If you're at GoodGuys this weekend come see me. I'll be at the far end doing the autocross.

Charlie Ping's car is one of my favorites. It's why I put the 70 grill back in mine.

Very nice. Taking out the cowl vents is on my long list of things I want to do to mine. Very nice indeed.

Hi Chris. As usual.. I will shoot from the hip and give my dirty penny on the stripe you've implemented here. It looks nice.. but maybe just a bit unfinished.

IMHO, the black stripe needs the typical body colored perimeter stripe/delineation to really make it pop. From my taste/perspective.. the wider and more pronounced the main stripe is.. the wider the body colored perimeter stripe should be to keep things within scale.

At this point.. an easy test to see if you'd like that look would be to find some blue "long mask" tape in 3/4 width(I think 1/2 inch would be best but is tougher to find at the local hardware/paint supply). There are various brands.. and IIRC.. the scotch brand has a slightly darker blue(more navy) than the 3m variants to better match that paint color when in the shade. But any old long mask blue tape should give you a decent enough idea of how it will look.

I typically offset the perimeter stripe by the amount of the tapes width for best effect.. but maybe just run one side at varying offsets first to see what you like before spending too much time bending it around the corners. As I'm sure you well know by now.. what looks good from close up can be lost at a distance.. and what pops really nicely at a distance may be too much on the close up.. so we usually always have to run somewhere in the middle as a compromise.

With how bold that black stripe is.. I'd probably be leaning towards a 1/2 inch body color stripe offset into the black by about 3/4 of an inch for the best of both worlds. The other thing that I think you'll find.. is that the hoodscoop will look wider and more dominant as you adjust the perimeter stripings size and offset.. which in my book.. is usually a nice bonus.

Hope that helps and keep up the good work. (y)

PS. if you ended up liking the look and didn't wnat to go back to paint right now.. just go to a body shop supply and look at their striping color charts to find a decently matched color for the short term. Even the cheaper parts store tapes would be decent enough if you could special order something more closely matched than the pricier ones.. but that cheaper stuff can be a PITA to get off later on as the adhesive delaminates off the vinyl and makes a mess. Light heat from a heat gun makes it much easier to get off though.

tough to get the full effect from the low res pic's and only 3 minutes worth of PS work.. but I'm sure you get the idea.

I still like Chris' version better. Cleaner and simpler. Everyone does the border stripe. His car is definitely outside the box and shouldn't follow the norm. Being a rebel is cool!

    Don't change it Chris!!! :)
