Ok, here's the deal. My Mav is coming along slowly but surely. I have a '74 6 cylinder 200.

I went to check out the brakes and both the front and rear drums and shoes are shot, but everything else looks good. Here is the problem. I have 5 lugs, and I always thought that the 5 lugs only came on Mavs with the 302. When I went to order the drums I noticed that 70-73 and 74-77 have different part numbers and the 74-77 is about double what the 70-73 are.

Can anyone out there help me out? Just info on what the difference is. If it's just the "finned" drums are more expensive I'll go with the regular ones. I just need some decent brakes.

I know converting the front to disk brakes would be the best, but I'm not in the position to put that kinda money into the car just yet.

Nope, 5 lugs became standard on all Mavs/Comets from sometime in 73 up throught 77. For 71-72 most of the time, only the 302s came with 5 lug.

So do I have to go with the more expensive drums?

    Please say :(

I'm sure there are guys who can 'text' you into the differences, but if you're getting new brake shoes, you probably are already going to bring the old brake shoes with you to match them up at the parts store (I found NAPA have the best information).

I had to do this on mine - that's when I found out my car had an early 70's Econoline Van rear-end.

Not really concerned with the brake shoes. They seem to be the same price no matter what year. I'm worrying more about spending $400 on a set of drums or spending $160 on a set of drums.

70-72 are mainly 4 lug drums, 73 there is a mix I think, but all are 5 lug I think, I believe the v8 cars had disc, the rest drum, 74-77 all were disc.

No Mavs/Comets had disc brakes until they were optional in 74 and standard in 75-77. Previous to 74, no Mavs/Comets (regardless of engine) had discs. The 250 and V8 had bigger drums than the others in the early years.

Actually disc were not standard until 76. In 74 disc brakes became an option, in 75 manual disc and power disc were both options.

So pretty much I bought the year maverick:) Anyone have a set of drums with some meat on them? I just need about 6-8 months out of them.

And I didn't forget about you mavaholic! I am just trying to work out getting down your way asap. Besides setting a day the only thing standing in my way are these silly brakes. I didn't expect them to be this costly.

You might not need new drums.....you can have them "turned".

Try ebay...I see them on there from time to time.

Look around on-line. Lots of places that sell auto parts. I sure wouldn't shell out $400 for drums.

I wouldn't pay more than about $25 each for drums. Even new disc brake rotors are only $25-$35 each nowadays...
