I took my seats and carpet out today, getting ready for new interior. When I pulled the carpet up, the driver side floor pan is pretty much shot, passenger side looks perfect. My question is should I patch the rusty pan or put a new in it. I dont want a show car just a decent driver.

Is there a whole there? If u want a decent driver just do the bare minimum to get it to be safe. As for putting a new one in it, don't think you can find new ones. Probably patching is the way to go. U can always go back and do a more thorough job. Also, why is one side ok and the other so beat up?

I guess the drivers side is where it has been leaking, got to chase that down too

I would cut out the bad section and just repair it with sheet metal.

Did you do cowls or new windshield seals? Do you know what the cause was of the rust was?

Wow, it's pretty rusted, it's almost gone down the rocker side. How solid is it? looks pretty soft, once you start cutting, you might find there's not much left. Since your in GA, you should be able to find a good donor piece out of another car. Plus see it the cowl is leaking, or it's just from someone having wet feet all the time....

Fix the cowl first, then the floor.

I think your best off to replace the whole floor pan. I just redid my interior and had to rivet a few small pieces of sheet metal down in some spots but I think this one is beyond that. It looks like there are too many soft spots and I think once you started trying to rivet sheet metal in place you would find more of the pan breaking off.

If those were A/C cars, the cowl is stamped thin on the driver side where a non-A/C car would have the vent ... presumably to make it easier to cut out the hole for it. That is where mine rusted a bit, but it still was worse on my pass side.

Looking at that drivers floorpan and just going through patching the floor in mine, I would say chop all of that out, and put in new metal. You can get Mustang floor panels for cheap and narrow them up near the tunnel to fit. Leave lips where the panels will overlap and you can plug weld to, and the repair ought to go pretty fast.

In the course of patching the floor in mine, it has escalated by a factor of three as far as how much repair area I thought I would have to do and my floor started out looking a lot better than yours. The problem is when you weld to metal that starts looking that bad, it is really easy to blow holes through it. If you can't hammer on it and have it survive, it does not belong there ... cut it out. Otherwise, it is going to be pretty frustrating trying to fix it. Knowing what I do now ... I would have spent the $36 at CJs Pony Parts for a new front pan. I have spent close to that on just raw sheet metal now and had way too much time invested.

BTW ... I am just learning how to MIG weld ... this is proving to be quite the education.

I think I am going to try a new floor pan. Has anyone tried one from Autokrafters?

This is about as close as you will get for a new floor for a Mav ...

It is a replacement floor front pan for a 64-73 Mustang (hard to believe that they all used the same stamping!). It will not be identical to a Mav pan. It is wider. Others here have reported using these with some trimming and had good results. For $29 I would say it is an excellent starting point. They have a shorter version too, but it is only $1 less. Our seat risers are different than Mustang, so if yours are still in good shape, I would leave them.

If you order more than $50 from CJs on a Wednesday, it is usually free shipping. Not hard to rack up $20 more worth of goodies there ... $4 spot weld cutter will be handy
